I have searched but not found a topic to answer my question, so here goes has anyone found an iPad with a sunlight viewable screen for use under the spray hood on my boat, any suggestions greatfully received thank you.

iPad‘s are not made with differing screens: you get the standard for the model of iPad you choose. The variation between models of iPad tends to focus on increasing the pixels and depth of colour available rather than screen brightness. In direct sunlight they’re all fairly difficult if not impossible to read: under the spray hood shouldn’t be too much of a problem. I can read my iPad under the bimini in the Med to give you an idea of how readable it is: take it on the foredeck and you can’t read it at all.

Thank you Duncan, I already have an iPad 3 and use it on a bracket attached to my C120 which is old and also unreadable in sunlight, I was wondering if later models of iPad were any better, I have tried a screen that was supposed to help but it was no good at all.

If it doesn't have to be Apple brand, I recently bought a Samsung Tab S5e which has an AMOLED screen. Slthough I have not yet tried it outside, one YouTube review I watched suggested it may be reasonably viewable in daylight.

Samsung's current range of tablets starts with the A10 at about £150, then the S6 Lite and S5e at about £340 and £370 respectively. The S5e is the one with a better screen - to quote that video, "it's the same as the one in the much pricer Galaxy Tab S6" (I find the S6 is around £600). The S5e is better than the S6 Lite in a number of other regards - the S6 Lite wins only if the stylus and handwriting recognition is important to you.

You say the C120 is dated - I can attest that my B&G chartplotter, the 7" Vulcan, is very clearly visible even in the brightest sunlight. It appears they're doing the chart cash back offer for the next few weeks.

Thank you for all that. What i would really like is another C120 that I can see in bright daylight, All my instruments are Raymarine or Autohelm all nearly as ancient as me. I am reluctant to change everything we have been together for around 30 years. I will look at other plotters and the Samsung range

My boat is equipped with a bunch of Autohelm instrument displays and a Raymarine autopilot and recent sailing tempts me to bite the bullet and replace them. However I can understand your reluctance to do that.

I tried my Samsung Tab (the S5e) in bright daylight this week and can confirm it's perfectly viewable in daylight. I used it in the cockpit to reference a PDF / saved website of "what your telltales are telling you". I pulled up the Link app and compared it with the B&G side-by-side and the B&G is very slightly brighter, but it's very marginal and you wouldn't know unless you were looking for it.

The only problem I found is with the power requirement of the tablet at full brightness the charger would not keep up and it would soon overheat

Wow thank you everyone sounds like just what I am looking for, I always used my iPad plugged in to boat 12v supply under the spray hood. I will have a look at the 5se.

Hi are there many apps for the S5e like Navionics or Anchor watch etc please?

What you need to know is the cd/m2 or nits (brightness) of the screen.
The higher the number the more viewable in sunlight.
The hard part is finding that out for a given device

Just be aware there are WiFi issues with the S5e. it has two aerials, one each side. It's a great tablet but I had lots of WiFi drop out problems. Plenty on Google & as it's a hardware problem never got fixed by Sammy.

I have replaced it with the S6 as it has the same screen but four Wifi aerials & rock solid Wifi connection. Not cheap but if you buy direct they offer good trade ins for old devices.

Google "I pad Screen Protector" Lots, I know you can get anti-glare ones.

We use a Samsung S5e onboard running OpenCPN. In sunshine it is unreadable. Under the sprayhood on a good summer day it is just acceptable. Also the Amoled screen needs a anti glare screen otherwise it’s not usable onboard. A iPad we use onboard as an E-reader performs just as good/poor.

We use a Samsung 5se with OpenCPN. In full sunlight it’s hopeless. In full sunlight under the sprayhood it is acceptable. Also an anti glare screen is a must. An IPad we use for ebooks performs just as good or bad as the Samsung.
