Just updated my iTunes and there was a Navionics app update including a new Autorouting feature (£2.99 add on).

"Simply select your destination with a tap on the map and Autorouting charts the course".

Apparently this does not replace safe navigation practices. :-)

Maybe a step too far me thinks!

Have you tried it? Is it any good as a passage planner? Do you need an iPad3? Mine is an iPad2 without 3G or GPS.

No not tried. Not really of any interest. Read a review saying not as good as the Garmin system. Any iPad with GPS would work. I guess it would work to do the plan on an iPad without GPS but no course tracking.

There is little info as to how it plans the course. If I said my draught was 20 metres for example, would it still try and take me over Bramble Bank - don't know so not criticising.

Planning a passage is part of the fun surely and seeing and planning the route makes you aware of what to expect on a passage plan. I hate the idea of a click and go sail - that is not a plan at all.

It's carp. I wasted £2.99, it doesn't remember your boat settings between uses, and defaults to 15m draft, 30m beam etc. It can't cope with anything except a simple headland, I thought it would be useful for complex routes where you go along and tweak the waypoints. It's not.
