These are screen shots of the same Navionics Chart areas taken on an iPad mini 2 and a Hudl 2.
I bought the hudl to have as a permanent chart display below deck to show position on passage. As you can see from the first 2 images the iPad is more suited to the task. Also you can see the difference on zooming in. They are the same charts with the same chart add ons. I think the Hudl2 is great value for money but I think that iPad is worth the extra as a chart plotter.

Is it not just the software differences between Android and Apple for the Navionics App that account for the charts looking a bit different, not necessarily the hardware?

Interesting comparison as I am considering both, however the first two images are at a different zoom level so would be expected to show more detail in the more "zoomed-in" screen. The other images are at the same level of zoom, not quote the same level of detail but pretty close.

Well either way you can see the difference. @ Georgio They are pretty much at the same zoom level. The different screen aspect ratios make comparison a bit of a challenge but I think I've been fair.

Is the Android app designed to work on lower definition mobile screens?

I'm trying to show the difference between the Hudl and the iPad. Not necessarily android v IOS.
If anyone wants a specific area comparison I'll do my best to oblige.

When you pan out on the iPad you get to here before it changes to the base map

On the Hudl you can only pan out to here

Which is what I try to show in the first two images of the initial post.

But you're not really interested in detail when it's along way away. You can't see it anyway on a small screen.
I've just got a Hudl on which I've got Navionics SD. I think it's brilliant for the money. I'm not into apple stuff. The drawback with Navionics SD is the lack of info like you get on a plotter. (XTE, COG, SOG etc).

No practical experience with it yet but I got a Hudl2 for Christmas and I agree.

No extra cost for the Navionics SD because I'd already bought it for my phone.

This is perfect for my use of the Hudl. Raster without the bells and whistles of Navionics but serves my particular purpose.

I've got Navionics on a Lowrance chart plotter and the level of detail is similar to your Hudl2 example. I'm really rather disappointed in the detail. In fact, for close in stuff I have much more faith in the CMap app I've got on my Nexus 10. I'm rather impressed by the IPad stuff. However, it seems odd to me that Navionics would produce different levels of detail on different operating systems - after all it's all the same data.

I have a Lowrance plotter too. I have Navionics Platinum charts on the plotter.
Have just taken some photos of them both for comparison. Not great quality but hopefully of some help.

Interesting thread. I have just had a play with navionics on my nexus 10 and my wife's galaxy note 8. Neither have the same level of detail as either of your two tablets and whats more dont work on the same scales either. The Note 8, which is a similar size to the IPad mini and the tesco jobbie shows more detail than the IPad though not a lot more. And it fades to the base map at about 1.8m scale.

But the charting software is different anyway. There are more plotter like facilities on the Apple version than on the Android one or so I was told. I believe you can get things like TRK on the apple jobbie. That said I reckon either of them would do as a back up but no more than that.
