Hi all,

SWMBO has a new ipad thingy for an early xmas gift, obviously I am looking for a use for this on the boat and would love to find the Panel's choice for a charty plottery upload to stick on it, I have the Navionics on my phone but this does not seem available for ipad...
Any advice chaps ?

Navionics is available for iPad.
You can also get all the admiralty charts for the uk from Memory Map. I have both as I like to look at the Admiralty ones, but use Navionics for planning.

Navionics for iPad, buy via the pad not the phone. Free chart updates for life, also buy the £2.99 route upgrade. Positive comments about the Imray charts as well.

Thanks for the advice, question is what term do you use to search in the apps store, 'Chart plotter' and 'Navionics' come out drawing a blank.
Hence my confusion..

If you type in Navionics from an IPad you get Navionics and a choice of iPad or iPhone versions.

Don't forget that you will need some form of waterproofing and restraint for SWMBO very expensive gizmo, if you intend to use it in anger.

My thoughts are that these things can be a bit of fun, and useful in an emergency, but a dedicated plotter is the thing to buy for regular use.

Second the use of of a waterproof thingy - 'twas a bad day watching mine sinking to the bottom of Victoria Marina in St Peter Port after my son (having removed from said waterproof thingy) dropped it over the side!

In regard to charts, consider subscribing to VisitMyHarbour.com which provide access to hundreds of charts for about £30 if memory serves correctly. Alsobget a brilliant interface with Google Earth which is a fantastic passage planning tool.

I like having the Imray charts on my iPad. Not really ideal as a chart plotter while underway, but great for "planning" (by which I mostly mean dreaming about where I might go :) ).

Consider yourself lucky. My family having given me books I hated, year on year, have just given me a Kindle! What am I supposed to do with that?

Rob.

A kindle is good. I am reading Vilhelm Moberg's second book on Swedish emigrants going to America in 1850. Not as cheap as the charity shops but you have more choice.

I wish. They withdrew my app just after I bought it, so no more updates. Possibly the worst customer service I have ever encountered, they effectively said "Tough ****!"

Be warned that they seem to be doing it again at the moment, as some charts are unavailable like last time.
