Having got my Ipad last Thurs, played with it over the weekend and been singularly unsuccessful with my last post about apps I thought I would try again.

I am getting there using it.

I'm sure there are shedloads of forumites who have all sorts of apps that were mistakes and many that are terrific. Would like some guidance/suggestions to avoid wasting time and money. This would be for boating predominantly on the S Coast. I know which weather sites to bookmark, the latest comic has all those. Navionics v Imray, there's a starter question...any views? What else?

Please no squabbling or willy waving about who has the best.

Navionics v Imray

I use both and find each has it's merits. If choosing only one I would suggest Navionics: I particularly like the option of overlaying Google Earth images when I'm looking at landfalls I've not visited before and I find it easier to create routes. Imray offers the comfort of an "old faithful" format so I find myself using it to review the thoughts I've formed with Navionics.

Hope this helps!

I use Imray cos I'm an old fart find the paper lookalike charts easier to live with.

Tides plan11 is useful.

iGrib for long term weather.

Everything else I have bookmarked in Safari browser.

My favourite is Boatie. I know it is really an iPhone app, but it is by far the easiest way to get local tide data, inshore water forecast and shipping forecast.

+1

I find it the easiest way of getting local weather forecasts that are updated regularly...no missing the CG on the VHF any more :)

I like the imray apps, because I'm old fashioned, i use a gps dongle With a non 3G version ipad 1.

For 5 day forecasts I prefer wx chart eu app, but also like weathertrack for gribs, which i follow for academic reasons in readiness for when i am a blue water retiree, and i need to uderstand the gribs better/500mb etc.

Wx chart eu has got a "trip list" thingy that i prefer as its just normal weatherfax and it stores it on the phone, I then transfer the phone images to the iPad with a Bluetooth app if I can be arsed. If a cant be, the phone is good enough anyways nearly always. Except it can be tricky to gauge the wind speeds the phone if things are changing rapidly.

Weatherpro for real time rain radar (very useful for timing the passing of a front) and a whole raft of other weather info

I find the Imray app to be over-featured and not at all intuitive. In fact, it does my brain in. Navionics- dead easy.

I am often sailing with the same crew for club racing, cruising and weekend jaunts up and down the solent..

I have an App call Share-A-Bill, and have found it really useful toting up victualing, berthing and fueling etc.. Saves a lot of head scratching and keeps it all fair

and another vote for "Boatie"

Theres also one called Marina Guide which has its uses

Sorry to be late in replying to op thought it might turn into a another why did you bye that splatter.

When we bought and used a computer system at work after about 12-18 months I reckoned I then new enough to buy one and it's just the same with iPad you will have to find out for yourself because it's how you use that matters

I have ipad1 3G and have found it a little frustrating that you have to buy to try apps which is ok when free
With regards to the charting apps I have both navionics 1+2 and imrays also Isailor

My preference is navionics the latest version but feel done by the change from 1-2

Isailor if you can limit the charts could be quite good

Imrays although I have used it on PC is clunky to change charts

Other apps boatie imrays racing rules ais ship finder great if you have phone coverage

iTunes and iBooks are essential along with varies games

You can also use for the forum!

For weather Apps please see http://weather.mailasail.com/Franks-Weather/Grib-Files-Apps.

It really comes down to ease of use and what you want. The GRIB data are all from the GFS.
