I am going to try using my ipad as the electronic nav gizmo alongside a paper chart.

I don't have a GPS ipad so will need an external gps.

wondering whether to go for a plug in version or a bluetooth external gps. with an external gps the ipad will then fit into a waterproof case.

does anyone have experience of the bluetooth connection - is it 100% reliable or does it drop out every so often?

thanks

Nick

Bluetooth is inherently reliable, but of course it depends upon the implementation, the operating environment, as well as the client (hardware, software, and OS). I use several BT devices, including a Navman B10 BT "puck", Nokia (symbian) phones, Advent BT dongle, with Archos Android tablet, Vista PC, Asus Xandros eeePC; and I've never has problems with BT "dropping out".

The only problem in using a BT gps is that it needs to be charged up, which to my mind largely negates the point of a radio connection.

Hi

I use a GNS bluetoth gps with my Ipad and it works fine I usually leave the gps head pluged in to a usb at the nav station and have the ipad in a waterproof case that i can take on deck
there are only a few devices that will work with the ipad so make sure you get one that is compatible
