Best time to sail around the Ionian Sea ?
Well it has to be early spring , every harbour so far has been empty with just the odd yacht , , no loud music playing , the sea are still a turquoise blue , no high rated sailor screaming at other , no cross chains or bumper banging , even Vlikho looked clean we could still see the rudder when we where there , and to top it up the locals people are please to see you , feels like we gone back 20 odd years ,
Another two months and it all be so different ,

Do not post things like this. Makes me envious - but you can't turn the clock back, but just enjoy the memories. 15 years ago last week when we took delivery of our new Bavaria in Corfu.

Vic, if you're coming to Crete for a visit make it either May/June or October/November. Once the Meltemi starts in late June/early July there will be strong winds and big seas in the Kithera and Karpathos Straits (during a Meltemi) until it ends in mid-September. If you're still here in July/August it will be a wet and bumpy ride to get off!

Download my pilot for Crete from http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/25934908/Crete%20Pilot.pdfif you don't already have it. It would be wise to book if you plan to visit the marina at Agios Nikolaos, give Despina (the secretary) a call on +30 28410 82384 (tell her I sent you) or you could email depaman@otenet.gr (calling is more reliable). I'll tell Manolis and George in the Two Brothers to put extra beers in the fridge.....

Paxos is deserted of boats today. Lovely!

About five years ago we dropped anchor in Lakka one afternoon in late March or possibly very early April, there was just us and one other yacht which was on a buoy and looked like it may have overwintered there? Two hours later a Polish flagged yacht arrived to join us and despite having a half of the bay each to share, he settled himself >10m off our bow; the Ionian silly-season is not just in July and August.

For my part, I'd take October over April every time, you need to watch out for the thunderstorms, but the water's warm and you don't get those bitterly cold easterlies coming down off the snow covered hills/mountains.
