Ionian fuel.

Thanks all, just thought it may be cheaper on the mainland, Patras, Preveza, but obviously not, might as well just fill up in Gouvia.

Why do you need 2000 litres, I thought you had a sailing vessel.

Just curiosity.

Englander is a motor sailer, I have let my tanks get lowish, only 500 litres left in each. When full they allow a years cruising and generating, in the Ionian. She is also a 57' heavy (48ton) boat, her sails help fuel consumption, (masts too short) but will only really drive the boat, with greater than force 5-6.

How Big????

Wow, and I thought my tanks were big, at 350 Litres each, 2 off, so 700 Litres!! or 931 squids to fill up (in the UK).
Mind you, that amount of Diesel should last me about 30 years......

Not really your neck of the woods, but for future reference, we've obtained fuel at about 50 euro cents a litre in both Tunisia (bit tricky at the moment) and Montenegro.

A few months ago there was a post on the Mobo forum from a professional skipper of, presumably, a fairly large vessel. He had recently returned from a fortnight's cruise including France, Monaco, Italy, Tunisia and Spain. They spent £10,000 on fuel!

Everything is relative.

Sometimes I wish Tunisia was closer to Greece, then I could load fuel at 0.53 a litre!!

When we left Bar Montenegro they were selling duty free fuel, many big mobo's collect fuel there. It would be worth a cruise up there for 3000 L.

If your just going in for fuel you don't need a permit we did not bother the second time we were there. However to go all that way and not see the inlet would be a pity. I have also been advised that fuel is cheap in Albania and this is much closer for you.

I get your point and if I was to go, I would definitely have a cruise around.
Albania? Nobody from Gouvia, including the big motor boats, seems to go to Albania for fuel or anything else for that matter, dunno why, but will find out!

Thanks everybody for your input.

Greece runs a concessional prices on fuel in the Ionian Islands - less fuel duty as allowed by the EU. Read that in the Times discussion on how the distant parts of UK could have a reduced fuel duty. So the islands should be cheaper.

The most important thing that I am worried about when we fill up (in Levkas) in April, is how clean will the fuel be. I gather that after sitting for the winter, they have had problems with water. A forumite picked up a load 2 years ago - Bob Newbury on Birdivik.

Chris,

I suggest you fill up on the town quay at Preveza instead, using one of the mini-tankers. Or, if you can obtain the number, they will probably visit the yard. Their turnover is far greater than that of the fuel barge at Levkas and I would be surprised if they had any contaminant problems. Same at Nidri, I guess, where there is also a fishing fleet.
