Ionian - Dreemer/reality

Here we are in the Ioanian those islands off the west coast of greece. Dreemer plans to have a boat trip biz here, and altho it's v nice, everywhere very quiet now, and dozens of pleasure boats already here. Not sure if therer's enough loot to buy a boat, or (evidently) to clean one very much. Sort-of good for powerboating, an inland sea enclosed by islands up to 5000 feet high, but no go without generator and largae qty of supplies. I may write a pilot book for the area, but will need a thesaurus to find a thousand diffferent ways of saying "scruffy", "unsophisticated", and "manky food". Everyhwhere is half-built, app. for the taxes, so all the greek ruins in pompeii are probably exactly as they were. Seeya later

There is a concession on property taxes in Greece if you don't finish the house by putting the completed roof on. This is why so many properties have that half finished look whereas in fact they are finished.

Can't tell you how envious I am. You forgot to mention the crystal waters, the breathtaking views (better from those hills you're looking at), the sense of history and the friendly people. The summer months are busy enough to sustain the biz but it's the sheer relaxed attitude to everything (including roofing!), the lack of urban development, the simple (hardly manky!) food that appeals so much. After a life of cities, high-tech toys, shopping centres, lawn mowing and school runs I'll be ready for the Ionians (ready for 'em now in fact!).

I guess some people like Florida, some like the Thames and some like the Ionians -vive la difference!

Where are you exactly?

well you must feel sorry for me.i live and work here .As the C&a profile for Greece says :nobody comes to Greece for the food:But there are compensations. Last sunday went for a few hours gentle sail out of Patras .lovely day mid twenties C. Beautiful views of the mountains,force 3 to 4 l.This weekeng going up to Prevessa to work on THE PROJECT.Fitting new windows and some varnishing afterwards.Have to dress up in shorts and Tee shirt . its getting cold now.
Later a couple of pork Chops and a kilo of wine for me and HWMBO at Aktio ferry .Break the bank at 4000 Drs. ( about 8 Quid for the pair of us.)
My previous posting was Cochin in India that was even better. The alternative is west lancashire.No Contest

to save you time there is already a Greek Waters Pilot by Rod Heikell which has just been updated - I bought a copy a couple of years ago just for the pictures (seriously, well and just in case we're ever lucky enough to have a boat out there as well of course!)

Is Bodaecia private??

Is Bodaecia a private yacht??? I thought it was like one of the little cruise liners that come up the Thames hang around for a few days and head off again.....

Personally I am quite impressed by the huge bugger in St Kats that they must have got in there using a crane and vaseline!!!! Wud love to wander around Bodaecia for a nose....

Tour round Boedacia - Just mention my name

Through various business contacts have managed to get in touch with captain of said ship. Owner is currently "out of the country" as he put it and not expected back till early Nov. Consequently crew are just there on a care and maintenance basis. Kindly invited me and any of my friends if interested to pop in for a drink but was at pains to point out that couldn't offer full hospitality due to "a bit of a refit going on in the galley". As long as we don't mind just a Big Mac and large fries no probs. Unfortuantly I've had to decline kind offer due to imminent arrival of delivery of Soltron, but if anyone else happens to be close by more than welcome to drop in for a looksee.

Just tell him DFLight sent you.

Bryantee - you should know by now that you are not supposed to mention warmth and lovely boating weather on this BB - it upsets people in places like West Lancs.
We are driving over to Ft Lauderdale tomorrow to spend a couple of days at the boat show. It's unseasonably warm(29C) and humid though, but we'll manage with top class accommodation and good food, instead of the manky stuff some people have to eat!

I'll reply in longhand next week. I'm in Levakadas now, been alkl around ionian: cephalonia, ithaca, etc. Not very hot at the moment, lots of places closing, hence finding larger villages and towns. Also breathtaking views, crystal water, sense of history and yes, v friendly people spolit only by twat boat renters, more later. There must be very large tax breaks on half-finished buildings. Or a sense of ART that we just don't understand?

He'll need some treatment too! His blimmin almanac includes some musings about Homers Odessy, and a load of blither. Every town is sleepy, and lots of them are "difficult to find from the sea until you are close in". Not one has a lat and long, no waypoints, nothing. That crap boat over there with the miserable git on it who never goes into town and gets sloshed- that's RH, that is.

I have at last translated some of the Greek Pilot waffle. It says "unsophisticated". This is shorthand for "when you go to the lavatory anywhere at all in the Ionian and probly most elsewhere in Greece , the toilet ppaper must be deposited in a wretsh-inducing binliner and not actually in the bog itself".
