A friend just called, he has got an inverter from Maplins that runs everything from power tools to laptop but his missus is winging because her hail straighteners are the only thing that don't run from it? any ideas why not?
What is the power rating for the inverter? I fitted a 500W unit into a friend's boat last winter and it worked fine, but it won't run a hair dryer or similar as they require much more than 500W.

Whats the power output of the inverter? The hair straightners will be drawing a high wattage when heating, possibly up to 1000w
[/ QUOTE ]Just looked at SHMO's "salon" hair straighteners - rated at 50w and fitted with a 2 amp fuse (according to the plug anyway). Don't see them taking 1kw even at startup.

What is a "hail straightener"? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Really bad weather in Blighty, eh?
It is conceivably possible that they have an electronic switch that doesn't like the inverter waveform, but it seems unlikely. More likely to be whatever adaptor or extension is being used to connect it with, I suspect.
Be careful using rechargeable appliances. Unless the inverter puts out a pure sine wave there is a very real possibility you will damage the tool/charger or both.
Many inverters put out a modified sine wave which lots of rechargeable units in particular do not like.
