just had a look on tlc-direct.co.uk at the TLINV1500, 1500w modified sine wave, whatever that is, .....(wish I'd saving that MBM inverter test now)........., peak power 3000w all for £248 inc vat. Maplins site had £499.99? for a 1500w inverter. Am I missing something here?

Price difference could well be because there are two types of inverter technology to do with the type of electrical 'wave' they produce. the more expensive produces the more 'pure' and thus more expensive and is less likely to damage delicate electrical goods. At this time cant remember much more about the details of the technical differences, but i'll have a think and add more if I can. That degree in Physics has actually done me no good whatsoever!!

I wouldn't recommend an inverter for boiling a kettle (1500W). If that's a 12V battery you're connected it to, it'll draw around 125 amps and flatten it in about the time it would take to boil your kettle - apart from frying the wires!

Thought the kettle bit would invoke a response, what I didnt say is that I only boiled the kettle whilst going along with two big engines running.

I saw 600 watt invertors in Maplins yesterday for £39, I also saw a bigger one for £139 ish, it may have been only 900 watts, worth giving them a call to see if they have a 1500 as all their invertors are now reduced to very low prices. I think anything over 300 watt or so has to be connected directly to the battery, something for some to consider if they were expecting to use the ciggie lighter socket /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

wonder why the web site said £499.99 must have been a sine wave one

P.S. need the kettle to make pot noddles on the move/forums/images/icons/smile.gif .....cue Oldgit

bought an 800w invertor off ebay recently, they might do larger. But for boiling whilst going along, how about a 12v travel kettle. Might take a bit longer but just as convenient, and no big wires needed - run off cigarette lighter circuit.

You can also get low power 240v ones, I have one to go with my low power toaster powered from the 1000w generator. Haven't found a microwave under 1000 watt input yet, I would be interested to know if there are any about.

Have a look at The Van Shop GB for the lower powered microwave. Although they're not actually that good. Thats why you can't easily find one with consumption much below 1000 watts.

Thanks Barry, Somebody told me there was a truckers cafe up near Rugby that also had a shop that sold loads of 12v gear, anybody know of this place?

Wotcha Sun,

I must disagree with the advice on not boiling your kettle with an inverter.
I've ran a 1500 Watt inverter from a deep cycle battery with an independent charger for the past two years without any probs.
It'll boil the kettle all day long, we've even cooked dinners in the microwave (600wt), watched telly/video for hours before the low power alarm has sounded.
I run two sockets from it, one for the microwave and telly, one for the kettle and toaster. I'll have a look for the paperwork to see if I can remember where I bought it from.

Syd :)
