Hi I'm Ed Snelson, I'm 12 tears old and have been interested in motorboating for about 4 years now.My dad currently owns a Windy 8800 which I drive frequently.
Hopefully I will be crewing a trip to Wicklow from Porthmadog with my dad next year along with attempting to get my Powerboat1 and Powerboat2 certificates.
In a few years I will inquire into joining the navy at officer level,by that time also having my ICC.
I look forward to your reply's,
Ed Snelson

Well welcome to the forum, I also started boating when about your age, with a voyage from london to paris & back.

Boating has without doubt had a great effect on my life, gave me a great interest in mechanics & electronics.

So what will do you think your speciality be, engines? navagation or what?

good luck & get plenty of sea time in & dont forget you will probably see the buoy/ landfall before Dad!

David

I'm not 100% sure on what I my speciality will be,but my first choice would probably be mechanic. When I leave the navy I would still like to work with boats hopefully chatering or brokerage.

I'm not in the sea cadets at the moment but I would like to get some qualifications and get some passage time under my belt. The longest trip I have done so far is from Porthmadog to Abersoch being only 15nm.

Welcome to the forum. My first proper sea trip Was from Pwhelli Though I never learned how to spell it!! To Wicklow. It's not the easiest of first trips, But at least you can see where your going till passed Bardsey Isle. Though god help you if you arrive at the wrong time!! Take the time to look round the Island, it is a Privilege to any one who can get there.

Welcome Ed,

It's good that you can share the same hobby with your dad, I was keen as mustard on boats in my early teens, but all my dad wanted to do was fish from the safety of the river bank! And if I can pull my son off his X-box long enough to come on the boat, he just sits in the cabin and plays games on his mobile. (ok put the violins away!).

Nice to hear about your training plans, but do a diesel engine course next, then when your dad finally sees sense about all that Hell Pee Gee stuff and gets some real engines for the Windy, you'll be able to service them.

(Have you got access to his digital camara, if so try and post a few of his embarrassing moments /forums/images/icons/wink.gif )

Merry Christmas to all the Snelsons

Are you diesel powered now (You manage to slip it in everywhere)

Welcome Ed, I hope you realise how lucky you are to be boating at 12, I started when I was 46 - Thats 34 years wasted!!

Kind Regards to you and your family

Martyn

Hi Ed.
Welcome to the club. Most of the people here are even older than your dad/forums/images/icons/smile.gif and many will wish they were your age again.
Like you I wanted to go to sea as a professional sailor when I was still at school. However I ended up by going to university and then becoming the best educated truck driver in the UK./forums/images/icons/crazy.gif I regret not getting a job at sea - it's far more interesting "driving" around the world than along the M1 - so wish you all the best with your ambitions.
Are you buying Dad a new Windy for Christmas /forums/images/icons/wink.gif? Hope you have a great boating year in 2004.

If you had been interested primarily in Raggie type activities, I would have suggested joining the Army as they tend to have much more time for that type of activity than Navy. If you join as an engineer, you will have a lot more shore time than the seaman officers (now known as Warfare Officers), in which you can indulge your hobby. The engineers come in two different flavours:
Marine Engineer - propulsion (which by the time you join will be primarily electric/diesel or electric/gas) and heavy electrics (i.e. the generating of power)
Weapons Engineer - Weapons maintenance and all applications of electrics except the generating.
