As a new forum member, I would like to briefly introduce myself. I am a 70-year-old german doctor, the owner of a Southerly 110 since May. My hobbies are sailing, classical music, active and passive (French horn, violin, singing). After many years with a Moody, I bought a Nimbus 320 7 years ago and swapped it for the S110 in May 2023.

You might have trouble with your classical music here. I usually get shouted down when I try to introduce the subject and have to retaliate with links to something like Panic or Pierrot Lunaire. The southern Baltic and the Rugen were our favourite cruising ground. We can no longer do this but I would be delighted to hear more about the area and perhaps see some of your photos to remind me of old times.

We never did the Gota canal but it sounds intriguing. We once spent a very hot few days in Schaprode where there is a monument to the canal’s designer, whose name I forget. While in Schaprode we chanced upon a concert in the lovely old church which included Mozart’s oboe quintet. The quality was outstanding even though the audience was very small, giving us a chance to chat with the players in the interval. My German is non-existent but we did once do a 3-day regatta in another of our favourite places, Neustadt, where one of my few German word, achtung, came in useful.

No trouble with Classical music with me!

When First Mate and I first met she had an evening job with her School, Pitmans Secretarial College in Wimbledon. She did entry level shorthand and typing at their Paddington campus two nights a week. She got the job by being a star student.

I would collect her from Paddington with the motorbike and we would often go to Saddlers Wells. Die Fliedermouse or perhaps Orpheus in the Underworld. Light stuff, but enjoyable.

The next time we might see Zoot Money in a Brixton pub or Humphry Lyttlleton at Barnes.

Good music is good music, be it simple Delta Blues played on a harmonica and guitar or a full Symphony Ochestra doing its stuff. I never got into chamber music though......................................

We sail in the North-Sea, Baltic-Sea and I hope to be able sailing the Göta-Channel.
Nice cruising ground. We enjoyed coming back through the Gota and Trolhatte Kanals - though as we were early in the season, the amount of debris in the water (mainly bits of wood and shrubs) meant had to be very careful attempting to use the bow thruster. A week or so later it was fine.

Nice area to sail - I have cycled around Denmark and I have the Gota canal in mind for another tour. Would love to sail the Baltic.

And a nice boat, especially for shallow waters.

I sail from Wales around the Irish Sea and carry a guitar with me. Despite concerns over its welfare it has done fine and is a great addition to the on board entertainment.

Good chance to see opera during the summer season both at Läckö castle on Lake Vänern
The Opera: Tintomara - Läckö Slott & naturum
and at Vadstena Akademi on Lake Vättern (mostly modern)
English | Vadstena-Akademien
Mooring overnight actually in the castle moat at Vadstena on Lake Vattern was one of our all time best overnight stops - Google Image Result for https://resfredag.se/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/DSC05964-1200x800.jpg

The shallow draft of the Southerly would be ideal - very marginal with our 2m draft and deep rudder. We had to use the bow thruster to turn in, watching the rudder just clearing the ancient foundations of the castle. Magic.
