I would like some help please! I have my laptop on board in portugal, nokia 6210 phone, which now talks to the computer. I need a very simple server, no AOL's etc. Just a simple server, with local server acess in most meddy countries, but especially portugal, spain, france and italy. Is there such a provider? I need to be able to sign up from portugal initially, with a non free phone or 08 number, as my phone wont allow that, it has to be a normal open number, I have asked for this before, but am still havin difficulties, tried vodafone, they couldnt help, tried time computers (mine is a time) they just looked at me blankly. I will be in UK at christmas and could bring the computer with me to sign up, would this be the best option, but with who? AOL frighten me!

Close cousin of AOL (ie owned by them) but I use Compuserve for all overseas work because I can get local dial-ups. Use an ancient version of some of their software because I don't like their latest versions for Mac but I suspect their PC software is better...perhaps someone can confirm or deny?

Oh a bit extra - you dont need to bring your computer to uk to sign up. You could do it from any computer here and just set up the dial up networking details on your m/c when you get back. In fact I could sign you up from my computer and send you the logon details if you like.
Not sure I understand the problem with the 0800 numbers. I rang in to uk 0845 via orange from france this summer. Is your cointract for mobile with portugal or uk?
One thinmg i do know...internet/email via mobile is very slow and very expensive compared with landline.

Orange will let you use o800 numbers, they even allow freephone numbers in UK. Mine contract is with the UK. I may well take you up on your kind offer, then I could get it all sorted. I know its slow, but for e mails, for getting called to work, keeping in touch, its faster than trying to find an internet cafe. Especially when I want to save money on moorings, by anchoring a lot next year in the ballearics. I will see what I can do from here in Norway, what isp could I sign up with?

It seems you have to be a "member" of compuserve or have an account, to get anywhere I have a 0870 number, which I will try, bu it doesnt look promising, its so easy in UK, they will throw the discs' etc. at you! But I just want something simple and whammo! Cant help you sir! Thats why I asked the forum, theres got to be some experts in this stuff out there!

BT Internet - 0800 capability

Yep - £14.99 per month. Only via a BT land-line though, having said that once it is set up it might work elsewhere. No GSM pop that I can gather.

Re: internet USE THE BANKS

If you have a bank account in one of the countries your reffering to or if you can get into a local bank office then they often have free CD's for online access, which although designed to get you to access their services on line do use a local ISP so once your on tyou can go where ever you want. Only minor issue is your log on screen is in the local language but once your surfing that goes away.

mobile internet and dial-ups, the fun is just begining.

Signing up for a UK service with an 0800 or 0845 s great when your in the UK but, although you can connect, you are still paying roaming charges.

The big isp do have local dial up's for most countrys but again if it's a UK phone you still paying the extra.

I travel on a regular basis to Helsinki and Paris and have stuck to my UK isp

There are a number of solutions to mobile internet but it depends what you expect.

Most mornings I browse through these forums on my way to work using my Nokia 9210, for me it's a good solution. I can dial in to all my mailboxes at yahoo, hotmail bt and work using native messaging UI lok at headers and download what I need.

The web browser allows me to check bank and credit cards. I can look at the met site.

I can also receive fax sms and view wap sites. At present this is the best one box solution on the market and slightly quicker the ir to laptop.

You then have the two box solutions, palm ipaq to mobile either in the form of gsm snap-on card phone or ir.
Slightly more difficult as you are balancing 2 bits of kit at a time, but until mid next year possibly a good way forward.

With the introduction of a fully functional GPRS or 2.5G network download/upload is vastly increased. I am testing some new phon software at present with gprs network and e-mail is about 20 times faster.

I'm going to shut-up for now otherwise I will ramble on for ages, this is my area I develop and test this stuff everyday of the week and tend to evengalise a bit.
