I would be most grateful if anyone can advise me how to get onto the internet via a mobile phone and a laptop in order that I may be able to download 'weather details'
I have a 'bluetooth' phone linked to Orange (who were unable to help in their shop). Thank you.

You need to link the phone to the laptop. If the laptop is bluetooth enabled, you need to turn on the bluetooth on the phone and laptop, and create a connection, otherwise use a data cable to connect them.

Then use the cd that came with the phone to create a 'modem' (the modem is the phone). If you have a bluetooth connection, then create a bluetooth modem, if you have a cable connection, create a cable modem.

Can't give you specific instructions as this will vary with the phone and the laptop and it's OS

Re: Internet via mobiles ..... yeh easy .....

That's why we gave up with all the kerfaffle and changed to data-cards .... (we have Bluetooth enabled / kitted out phones and Notebook PCs etc.)

We all now use PCMIA Data Cards with GPRS / 3G capability ... > Huawei technologies - Huawei UMTS Data Card - HUAWEI 3G Data Card .....

All we did was sign a contract with Mobile co. who added these to our existing tel no's ... same as Data anyway would ...

It was like a breath of fresh air through the office ... all the swearing and cussing at phones stopped and all were connected without hassle ... so now we can sit on ships, at airport etc. etc. all happily connected and feeding back that lovely info so necessary to us to earn a crust !! With the contract we have ... we even don't use WiFi hot-spots now unless free .. our costs are small.

I don't know how true ... but we were told by our IT guys .... that SP2 with XP is a big problem for Bluetooth .. and they also said not to bother with Windows BT driver ... but who cares now - we have our cards !!!

I've found that using a data cable works more reliably than Bluetooth (but that might just be my phone). You may need to ask Orange to upgrade your account to include GPRS service. I also find it helps to speed things up (and keep costs down) if you disable images in your browser options (in IE, go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, then scroll halfway down and uncheck "Show pictures"), you can then load just the images you want by right-clicking them and selecting "Show Picture".

be very carefull to disconnect from the net when your finished. Some people have built up massive bills (6 k in one case ) by accidently remaining connected via their mobile.

Charging...

When I've connected via GPRS service, the charge has been based on data volume, regardless of time connected.

like sbc use a data card, (option Globetrotter Fusion), which works fine. I always had problems connecting by using a phone as a modem.

The reason I am replying is to make sure you are aware of the Orange World deal which allows you to connect to the internet, (GPRS Only), for £1 per day... unlimited browsing.

I'm using it now with Onspeed, and it's pretty quick, even for ebay with all its' photos.

I tried bluetooth originally with a belkin PCMIA card and could never get it to work. I changed to a TDK card and after some messing around eventually got a connection.

Re: Charging...

That is true, but you often cannot control the amount of data that is transferred. By the time that Norton has updated all protection for the new viruses, MSN has updated Windows software, HP has done the same, Spyware Doctor ditto, you could have downloaded 20 - 30 Mb. At £ 10 per Mb (Vodafone) that's running into serious money. If you have some lurking spyware that you don't know about you could multiply this transfer by any factor you like.

Re: Internet via mobiles ..... yeh easy .....

Interesting topic - I also use a 3G datacard - always find Victoria Marina in ST P Port a real problem though, even talking to Vodafone, they say should be OK, but it isn't !

Usually it's pretty good though and doesn't drop the connection......

Yep - got the free 3G card - made sure I didn't sign upto any monthly contract - so no ongoing costs - cost is £2 / MB PAYG

Have also used GPRS over bluetooth to mobile - works - but I would have to agree its more fiddly and slower than GPRS with teh data card (and of course if you get 3G its lightning ..)

BT + SP2 ....

I don't doubt it ... but here even with IT guys having a go ... only 1 set out of 6 could be made to work correctly. All the others suffered drop-out at various times without warning ... drivers needing re-install when PC restarted ... it was so unreliable we looked for alternative. The Data-card has worked for all without fault. My comment was based on what was said by all the IT guys we pulled into this ... as it is vital for us to have mobile PC possibility in our work ... we beat our competitors by reporting direct without having to use office etc.
With that in mind you can understand that a system that worked "out of the box" was preferred to fluffing about with Bluetooth as we found. Whether it could be sorted or not .. we needed it immediately.

And at £30 for 3 yrs reg'n on 3G / GPRS and card free ????

Re: BT + SP2 ....

Depends on what experience the IT guys have, their knowledge might be across other systems etc. I've not had any problems with bluetooth , but it does take knowledge to set up, and the cards are easier for novices, yes.

The question wasn't about out of box solution, it was how to get online with a laptop and phone. You made a comment about sp2 and bluetooth being problematic. This isn't borne out in my experience over many systems, and in fact SP2 introduced the Bluetooth Wizard and a lot more inbuilt drivers which actually made it considerably easier to install and connect easily.

See this a lot, when someone posts a question about how to fix a IE browser problem, and some bright spark says get Firefox. or someone asks a question about fixing MS OS issue, and someone says buy an Apple. Not everyone wants to go and spend a fortune to buy an Apple, when 10 minutes of fixing problem will get their computer working again, etc.

In fact Brendan you have ...

Just given a very good argument to support my suggestion of going for the Data-card instead of the phone - Notebook combo. As the guy obviously wants to connect and is not a PC guru like you ....

And I am going to translate your post to give to our IT guys .... interesting to see what their reaction is ..... considering that iLink is the biggest and most reputable PC installers / set-up etc. company around here .... who virtually networked Ventspils and all its oil terminals etc. .... I don't think that Ventspils Nafta - biggest Oil Terminal in baltic is going to employ a Cowboy IT outfit do you ??? Oh sorry you do obviously from your post ....

As to Firefox and all the other rubbish mentioned ... please do not include me in that drivel - as I am not one to advise such ... in fact I think Firefox etc. is rubbish .. too many update problems with it...... maybe they fixed that now ... but last version I tried not so long ago ... still had it.

Oooh you are awful Brendan .... but I like you ...
