Internet & Mobile Help Needed

We are setting off into the inland waterways of France in April 2012, in particular the Burgundy region. We need to keep in touch with family in UK via Skype and occasional phone calls. We have a port de plaisance and French bank account and need advice on the most cost effective way to use skype via a laptop on board and the best mobile/dongle coverage in the region. What are the costs and has anyone any recent expeirence of getting a dongle for internet use, was it strong enough when away from French towns to skype with, what size dongle should we get?.. any help greatly appreciated..

hi.im sailing allong the coast(have been now holed up in barcelona) brought a french vodafone sim and dongle 29 euros + tax.1mb,been ok for internet . thou skype a bit hit and miss especially if the other peoples signal not strong.lots of wifi cafes/bars if you dont need to be to private.there is another one for 15 euros + tax half the size.both only last 30 days then need top up.will be watching this thread too incase something better comes up.

I know just have Vodaphones UK offering which includes 25MB per day at £5 per month for data in Europe. Much simpler, and means you can also roam for the best data signal - you are not stuck with vodaphone overseas.
