Thanks very much for the reply, it certainly gives me a bit more confidence now you have explained things. I plan to use it to manage my account as i shall be out of the UK for the next year at least. An internet account would make this much easier. Regards.

Peeps should be even more careful now ;I had an email recently with a web site mimicing Halifax's website, colours, layout, even that idiot with the pebble glasses, and a Halifax style URL, so it did not appear to be yet another scam.

I reported it to Halifax warning them of the relatively sophisitcated approach and suggesting they advised customers more strongly, but the replied with an automated system message.

Only goes to show that they care little for their customers - as indicated by their wrecking of Bank of Scotland's system.

First Direct

Absolutely agree. Banked with them forever, and they were fantastic when we lived in Annapolis for a year about 10 years ago.

Re: Why would you want to?

O K So glowing references from First Direct.
Do they pay interest like Smile?
Peppermint, I just want a second business account.
I have been using Egg online for my credit card payments and it seemed so easy that online banking seemed like the next step.
Thanks again folks

I have 4 accounts in Switzerland, France, Spain and the US, all of them accessible through internet.
All my banking goes through internet since many, many years, either for professional reasons, or now for convenience.
Never had the faintest problem.
When underway, I often connect to the bank(s) via internet cafés.
... And it works!

Go for it.

I saw the Cahoot thing on the news and was surprised. Bad publicity for them, but we've banked happily with Cahoot for 5 years with no problems and I understand no-one lost money anyway.

We've sailed in the Med for 2 long summers and internet banking is great for making necessary payments at home whilst managing money from abroad.

Only my opinion but travelling abroad sailing and living/working out of town in the UK internet banking is a convenient godsend. also pays better interest than most high st banks.

Re: First Direct

Likewise: I've operated a First Direct account from Italy for years (and have the statements etc mailed here) and never had the slightest problem.

Re:March of the machines

I bank, both business and privately. with a major High St. bank. If I want to speak to them I have the relevant managers phone number, if he's not there his clerk, sorts it out or gets him to ring me. He'll come to visit me if I ask. Last year he took me and the missus to two Premiership Football matches a Lords cricket final, full hospitality, and he arranges my tickets to the boatshows. My borrowings are very very low and my bank charges for two accounts was less than a grand.

Your telling me in this thread that this is unusual then. Thats why your going to the machines.

been online banking for a few years now ..... UK and Baltics ...... had no problem.

In fact UK has very restricted facilities to use compared to other banks / countries I have online bank facilities. Natwest is one I use and its basic to say the least ......

Used to get that treatment also back in 80's with Clydesdale. We would go out to lunch etc, then he got promoted down to the central belt - big overdrafts and no knickers territory - and some prat with jewellry took over.
Was in the process of building the 3rd house and he started to say I could not do it for the costings given. After a few heated disscutions he was told to still his account where the sun does not shine.
Went or called first direct and have not looked back since.

Access ...

My foreign accounts use a card system ..... a unique card is iisued for each account and it has over 30 different number codes .... 6 digits.
Log in with username / password and before you get into site - there is a second security gate - where you are asked for digit code xx ..... where you have to type in the numbers as shown against that numbered code ..... this request is a random of the card and activates every time you log in .... Secure and very difficult to break .... If you get code or any access wrong 3x - even if you stop and try nexct day etc. - it locks you out. The bank then has to reset the access. If you get it wrong and then get it right and get access - that resets automatically so that the wrong code is not retained.

Personally I think NatWest's online system still resembles the dark ages. You can't initiate a transfer on a notice account, you can't administer a third party account even if you're a signatory on the account - and the branches don't have email.

I love internet banking with broadband - it's wonderfully quick - but I don't believe for a moment that banking security is good enough for the medium and would be very wary - it's a bit like introducing this "terribly secure PIN numbers" for credit cards - how secure can 4 digits be ?

<hr width=100% size=1>a pragmatist is an optimist with a boat in the UK - but serious about not being in the UK !
