I was reading a US magazine called Blue Water Sailing and they refer to a MOB as a COB; as in Crew (or Captain) Over Board.

In the interests of safety, surely it would be better if we all referred to a swimmer as either a MOB or a COB, but not both? But then again, there is IALA 'A' and IALA 'B', I assume to keep us on our toes?

Difference is that under IALA B, the COB has to go over the Starboard side , and in IALA A the MOB has to go over the Port side.
The reverse is true when recovering the COB or MOB.
S'easy really.

I thought we were all supposed to be using "Person in Water" PIW. Some government and lifeboat/rescue literature uses PIW. Seems reasonable: "person" does not denote gender and "in water" is the state we are concerned about, rather than how they got there ("overboard")

Anyway PIW stands for Urinating In the Wind.
