International Folkboat - searching for drawings

Hi everyone,

I have recently welcomed a lovely International Folkboat to our family.

While researching the model I found multiple mentions of 'drawings being freely available', yet every link I follow up is either a dead-end or leads to a ghastly spiral down a plughole of Pinterest posts. I'm keen to spruce up the insides a bit and drawings would be extremely useful.

Does anyone know of anywhere these elusive plans can be found, even at a price? I'm getting netsick looking for them.

Any help/encouragement/advice about these lovely boats and their technical specifications would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Chris

Hi, and welcome as you've obviously got good taste in your boat of choice.
Anything else is less!
A couple of bits of info would be helpful here; is she a GRP Marieholm, or is she wooden, and if wooden carvel or clinker.
The 'true' International Folkboat is described in the link and is GRP.
As well as any pictures, have you previously owned one of these?

Hi Jamie, thanks for coming back.

Yep, that's the one - built 1970. She's pretty standard, apart from having a larger engine (15hP) than is usual. No big power uptick, just an easy, strolling unit that never gets strained and isn't too heavy.

The drawing you've sent as reference is the best I could come up with, but it's only about 1000px across in the biggest copy I could find. Rumour is that Sunden's original drawings are available... ...somewhere!

Never owned one before. I'm going to be sailing it with a much more experienced mate who's had a few boats, a shedload of dinghies and a lot of sailing/crewing experience.

Looking forward to getting quite wet and very happy.

Chris

Are these any good to you?
I realise that they're for the Nordic (and in Swedish), but I hope that they'll help a bit.

Wow! These are marvellous. (And it's hardly surprising that he didn't design it in English, I suppose.)

There's something very attractive about boat drawings - and these are no exception.

There must be a lot of parallels between the two models and everything seems to be in roughly the same place. I'm going to have a lot of fun poring over these.

And if nothing else, I've got the bedroom ceiling design sorted.

Thank you very much indeed!

After a quick bit of 2+2=5, I found the resource archive of plans for the International Folkboat (Fritidsbåt IF) tucked away in the Swedish Digital Museum.

(It's not allowed to be called 'International' in Sweden, it's name there is IF-Boat, so searches for International Folkboat draw a blank.)

Thanks Jamie, I'd never have found these without your lead.

Here they are in all their glory. Full sails, mate. Cheers.

Very much my pleasure.
Your boat looks superb! It really illustrates the 'flowing simplicity' of the design; it's SO uncluttered!
Even the Swan in the background 'fancies' it. (y)

Hello Chris, congrats on your new IFBoat, nice engine!! I viewed it for a friend the day before you saw it. Buck has pointed you in the direction of the drawings and the Swedish forum etc. Also have a look at the quite active Marieholm International Folkboat site on Facebook, lots of daily help provided on there. Alan Macklin who is the contact for the UK IFBoat association at St Mawes Sailing Club wanted me to let him know who bought Polka, previously Olka I think to update his records. His email is on the sailing club site. Have fun with her... another one was bought this year and is being raced in the Solent, he is getting his sorted also, you will find him on the FB site. That is three that I know of now in the Solent. There must be a few more, including one that used to be in Chichester Harbour until about two years ago... we must all meet up at some point for a race/rally. Three others have been sold but have left the south coast and another is being sailed home from Sweden to Anglia very soon, once he finds a storm jib!

ALan Macklin at St Mawes Sailing club who runs the IF Boat association, his email is on the website.

IF Boat.se. The Swedish IF Boat owners association and forum will also have the details. I was looking at them yesterday.

MArieholm International Folkboat site on Facebook may be the quickest result but will all give you the same source of information. Do you know if it is a Proctor or maybe Seldon mast. If it is yellow it will be original!

Marieholm International Folkboat & M26 Owners Group

They still make them new here and are good for parts, accessories and advice.

That is an incredibly helpful stack of links and contacts - thank you very much.

I'm afraid we're going to be stealing her away from the Solent to get her a bit nearer 'home' (Essex is a bit closer to Sweden). But sailing her back South will be just as much fun as sailing her up East. I don't know if I'll be competent enough to race her, but I guess there's only one way to find out.

I will contact Alan shortly so we can keep in touch.

Thanks again for all the reading!

You probably know the Marieholm 26 is basically the same hull (plus greater freeboard) with a revised cockpit and deck moulding.

There is some excellent stuff in this blog that may help you with the refurb:

Marieholm 26 The Boat

.

Love the internal tour video.

Lots of ideas here, and really simple, clean layout.

Now for the rest of them - I have to take some Italian on board, as well as Swedish.

Good evening,

Thanks for all the support and the stack of information and contacts.

This reminds me of the secret fellowship of VW Beetle drivers in the 1960s, who would flash their lights at each other and wave with big silly grins on their faces.

I'll be taking a look at the mast when I'm next down at the boat - I'll let you know.
