For all you experienced PBOs, from an inexperienced 28ft sailing AWB owner:

In general, are there any structural reasons why I should not fix (glass-in?) a shallow hanging locker in my front cabin - in the corner between hull and bulkhead, from bunk-base to deckhead? Is there something about stress concentrations and making things too rigid?

And where near Gosport can I get nice plywood for internal woodwork? Should it be marine ply?

Things my father never told me - but he was neither a sailor nor a carpenter!

No reason why it would cause a problem.

Hawke house sell marine ply. However there is no real reason to use marine ply internally, so long as its "wbp", it would be ok. You may want to look at using some cheaper ply and attaching a suitable veneer to the surface so it matches the rest of the boat?

These guys sell sapele, and other veneers on a roll:

Covers in Gosport will flog you "wbp" plywood, or Wickes in Fareham.

There is a place in Farlington who sell all sorts of GRP stuff, including matt etc

If the edge is bonded over its length to the hull sides it may cause a stress and crack the gel coat over time. On some yachts the top and bottom is glassed in fully but the side of the panel is pressed up against a foam strip about 15 mm thick. The foam should be quite dense, like firm neoprene mouse pads. The sides of the panel can then be attached to the hull with strips of GRP say, 1/3 of the length of the panel from the deck and 1/3 from the base. This will allow your hull to flex and give the panel sufficient stiffness.

Thank you BlowingOldBoots, that confirms what I half remembered reading once somewhere on this forum, but I didn't know how to find it again (nb Oldvarnish's thread on the Nature of a Forum).

And thanks to the other responders on places to get suitable plywood

There is a boatbuilder based in Southampton doing some good deals on Fleabay with rejected Marine play (minor imperfections)... nice looking stuff. Also some in Fareham too. Just do a postcode search on Fleabay..

I've had poor experience with Wickes ply. I sorted through about twenty sheets until I found one with no apparent delamination, only to find when I cut it there were voids all over the place. I did get a refund (with bad grace on Wickes's part as they wanted me to accept another sheet) but I wasted a lot of time and energy. You don't have to buy Byunzeel (?) but you do need the stuff to be free of voids or delamination. Exterior ply is better than shuttering ply if you're going to go the cheap route but you get what you pay for.

I would use WBP for internal work . BS1088 ply without Lloyds approval has voids all over it so for internal work why bother spending the extra money .

You can glass it over it's full length if you want as long as it is isolated from the hull sides by sitting it on foam or a couple of layers of glass folded over so the ply doesn't touch the hull.

Farm barn full of rejects from one of the big mobo yards? I bought a couple of sheets from him a few years ago. Good stuff - whatever imperfections there may have been were undetectable to me - but I think he got most of it as one big batch rather than a continuous supply, and the range of what he has left is somewhat limited.

Thanks all for these comments and leads.

On plywood sources, I'd like to see before I buy, and I can easily get to Covers in Gosport, or maybe Bamptons in Southampton, but that boatbuilder from Southampton on Fleabay sounds just the ticket.

However, despite some serious web searching, I can't find anymore details for him (e.g. name, address, phone). Can anyone help me pinpoint him?

John
