Thanks. I am deeply suspicious of that Vetus strainer. It was certainly responsible for the first failure but I thought, by relocating it lower down, I had cured it.

Maybe not!

Hi Mirelle, An easy check but a fault that is easily missed- pull out the impeller
and check that the brass bush in the centre is still attached to the rubber outer.
This causes overheating as when the bush starts to slip there is reduced water flow.

Thanks,

Been there, done that thing, quite recently, with a Yanmar 1GM10!

The Volvo MD2 on the other hand has the type of impeller with a screw through the shaft - you pull the shaft out to get to change the impeller, and since the screw goes through the rubber I don't see how it could slip.

Fingers crossed......

Spent the weekend doing as advised - had every water pipe off and checked/replaced, also the exhaust elbow and water injection bend. Fitted waterlock no 4 and ran it up and apparently Result = Happiness - I can keep my hand on the rocker covers, as I used to do, the exhaust temperature is nice and low, etc. So far so good. Possibly the problem was a slight constriction at the water injection point?

One thought occurs, though - when the thermostat finally opens, it sends a slug of extremely hot (near boiling) water down the pipe - maybe this is hot enough to do the damage, as Vetus guarantee their water exhaust products up to 70 deg only!
