Interior lights: not sure what I want...

Hi all,

After beginning The Only Way Is Wessex Season - Season II (my trip to take an Achilles 24 from Harty Ferry to Bristol via the Thames and K&A) at the weekend in weather that I could barely stand up in, I spent one of the 3 days holed up in Holehaven, and soon realised that I haven't got my interior lighting right. Well, I haven't got my interior lighting at all, really...

I want a cabin light mounted to the bulkhead that's an LED, and supplies light to the whole cabin. More than one is ok. Might have one on both sides of the bulkhead. The thing us, I do like things to be a reasonable price, and I'm not certain £25 is..? Or do I just have to accept that it's not 1963 anymore, and stump up..?

Its not 1963 any more thats for sure and you could easily pay more than £25.

Make sure you know just how bright these LEDs are, or more precisely how much light you get from them, before you part with your money. Decide how many lumens you need and check the specs of any candidates before you buy them.

I'm sure someone will take £25 off you, but it's not 1963 and bright LEDs can be had for less than that.

I've no idea what you want, but browse that website and you'll find hundreds of alternatives. The CREEs are usually pretty bright.

Your biggest problem might well be running the wires neatly.

Ive fitted one of these in my 19 footer. I bought 2 but found that 1 was bright enough. I would have preferred warm white but couldn't source them.

I bought a cool white light for about £20 from Midland Chandlers because it was £10 cheaper than the warm white lights. Its far to harsh and has been relegated to a less used location.

I now have warm whites in lounge and kitchen, bought online for about £30 each. Much better!

Prices are really good and much improved lighting throughout the boat.

One thing that should be considered is the beam angle, sometimes you want a wide angle, sometimes narrow.

On a 25' boat, I've just fitted one of these small spotlights from Boatlamps (http://www.boatlamps.co.uk/contents/en-uk/d100.html) in each corner of the cabin. They're "warm white" and can be shone directly into the cabin if you want bright lighting for something, or turned around and shone into the corner for diffuse reflected light, which makes great soft lighting for evenings (and this from someone who's always said you can't beat an oil lamp for evening lighting on a boat). There's lots else besides on that website, though its true they're not 1963 prices...!
