The handheld unit was on the boat when I got it and its so old that it wont pick up satellites without a firmware upgrade from Garmin. That's free but it seems a waste to buy a cable for a one off exercise so if anyone has one they could lend me I would be very grateful. I think I have a serial to USB adapter somewhere

Can't help you with the cable, but I wonder whether you've tried giving it enough time to autolocate itself? When I cleared out my old boat, I found an ancient Garmin 45 which hadn't been used for years. I put a new set of batteries in it and turned it on, but it wouldn't get a fix. I left it turned on, outside on the garden table, for a couple of days, at the end of which it had found all the satellites and was giving a good fix.

Thanks I did give it a full day - at least a full set of batteries! there is stuff on the web that suggests a firmware reset is needed but I'll give it another go

I have an old handheld Garmin GPS V in a drawer somewhere that used a cable like that.
I'll have a dig around and if I can find it then it is yours.
