Bit slow to load ......it would appear several of the more expensive leading oils inc Mobile do not come out well,especially with their price premium.

Must confess in the past have forked out a blimming fortune on Mobile One as the the car I had at the time required oil changes every 5000 miles.
The adverts definately had me buying at the time...
the other neat trick was my car needed 5 litres and the can only held 4.5 litres.

Shame it's mainly 'Mercan brands but nonetheless is a useful comparator.

The only other comment I would make is that there's far more to oils than just basic lubrication at high pressures, so it's only one measure of their relative performance.
Longevity is the main criteria these days. Synthetics are better than semis and pure minerals, or should be.. i.e. lubrication after 20,000miles of combustion contamination. I would be interested to see a similar test on aged oil.

An intersting report, but not one for non experts, nor apparently written by such experts, and in this regard I am certainly not one, but do have some knowledge of oils and their functuon. It should be borne in mind that most of the bearings in our engines are plain shell bearings with completely different operarting characteristics to rolling element bearings used for the test.

It is also the case that rolling bearings require some resistance to motion (i.e. friction) to ensure they roll rather than skid, so I would question the value of this test at all for automotive engine oils, whose other functions are of greater importance.

Extreme pressure requirements of oils is more or concern in gearboxes where spur gears mesh. EP is not a normally required feature of engine oils per se.
 
Get the feeling that advertising hyperbole appears to go into overdrive with regards to engine oils.
Curious you now never see any TV adverts for oil ...GTX was once never off your blimming screen.
Is this down to the fact that very few folks now do DIY servicing and selling oil direct to the public is a waste of perfectly good advertising budget,better spent on few good lunches.

Nail on head! Interesting on the way to Portugal, France hypermkts had all the tools and oils etc for diy car maintenance. Similarly Faro Jumbo, everything, and I mean everything a diyer would need to diy, both auto and home. They actually sell cellulose thinners, acids, and all manner of stuff that are only found in trade outlets here! I presume it means that they are not willing to pay to have jobs done like we do or cant affird to?

Yes very probably, or alternatively they have more people who still know what they're doing to service their own vehicles, whereas engineering has been out of favour for so long in this country that most people can now barely change a light bulb...

Talking of changing a lightbulb, both my headlight bulbs went so popped the bonnet had a look and closed it just as quick. I had about 2" of gap to work in. Googled the problem and the answer is drop the bumper take out the headlights and replace. So off i went to Halfords to but extra long life bulbs as i don't want to keep dropping the bumper often. A pretty young girl served me id guess 18 tops, lovely make up painted nails etc. She said would you like me to fit them for £6. I, as you guessed jumped at the chance. Off she toddled out in her ballet flat shoes with me ashamedly sniggering behind her. I pointed out the car and was expecting "sorry sir we dont fit to that one". Long story short 3 minutes later she had finished and that included repairing the clip that i had previously broken. Big lesson learned that day!!
