My YC has approximately 250 swinging moorings on 4 "trots" each trot is about 3000 feet long. We use a system of ground chain (ex RN anchor chain, 2" closed link). Yes that's 12,000 feet of 2" ground chain.
Over the years we have tried just about everything to stop the riser shackles coming loose. We've tried standard grease, Duckhams Kenol, Stockholm Tar, mousing with various wires etc, etc.

About 4 years ago we started to use Loctite "nut loc" on the shackle threads + a plastic cable tie for added security and what we have found is that even though the the chain is coming up with the cable tie broken the shackle pin is still in place and what's more with a bit of effort we can undo the pin and the thread is in perfect condition.

I offer no recommendations, I'm only stating the "situation" as is, at my club!

FWIW we now use nut loc + a cable tie on all shackles.

Peter.

In my mooring laying days we would always horse up the the shackle pin so as there was enough thread showing as would allow us to "mushroom" the shackle pin and few moorings came adrift at this union only problem was that the riser wires (yes we used wire junks in those days )were most unpredictable and inevitably the equinoxial winds would give us our winters work
