Despite the Red doom about to engulf us all/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif,there has been a noticeable increase in not very economical at all, fast mid range craft located on the Medway.Various brand new flybridge boats including Sunseekers, Phantoms and many other older but never the less expensive boats have taken up residence. While some may have been attracted by the improved facilities at MDL etc,not a few are moored elsewhere in smaller yards.Perhaps displaced from more expensive areas or here by choice,it is still obvious that there is still substantial cash being spent on up market craft .

I agree, last Spring I went around the marina in my tender to see who was were with what etc.

I was amazed at the number of new bigger boats located on berths and also with the number of newly released models. I thought it interesting when this is coupled with the fact that the up market Brit builders export 80-90% of production

In my marina, 15 years ago a starter boat was something like a 21ft Fairline Sprint, the people who'd been doing it a while and were on second or third boats were typically in Princess 286 Rivieras or similar, and the big boys had Princess 35's and Fairline 36 Turbos etc. I remember the fuss when someone rolled up with a monsterous Princess 45, biggest boat in the marina!

Now people are regularly starting with Sealine F33's, Fairline 37 Targas, even Princess 38's are not uncomon as first boats.

The middle ground is probably 40ft-50ft and there are a significent number of Squadron 55's, Princess 52's, Sunseeker 55 Predators and so on right up to 65ft. That Princess 45 wouldn't raise an eyebrow today.

The interesting problem is for the marina, who have plenty of berths for 20 footers (of which there are hardly any), a reasonable amount of 30-35 foot berths, not that many for 40ft plus, and a mere handful of berths that will take a 50+ft boat.

Also, boats are a lot wider than they used to be for a given length, and therefore a pair of 40ft flybridge cruisers might fit in the berths lengthways, but there isn't really the space widthways to accomodate them.

The whole boat size demograph has changed hugely (literally!), but of course the marina is the same shape its always been...

Same has happened at Porthmadog - yachts and MoBo's. I was looking at a picture of PM in the 70's and the size and style of all classes of boat are much different. Different as in BIGGER, and much more expensive.

On the other hand. If I put my P35 alongside a new P50 theres not much difference!!

Odd then that they couldn't get two double cabins, a third 2 bunk cabin, two heads and a crew cabin in a P35 like they do in the P50...

;-D

Public facilties dire to say the least.

And I will bet you 1,000,000-1 that its got a bowthruster lurking up front somewhere./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
My main hope would be that the owners of such boats will have more clout in getting an improvement down here regarding the woeful lack of facilties.Better public access from river to shops would be a nice start.Only one of our public access piers is useable at low water, the others dry out or are practically derelict and most unwelcoming. We do not have a single pub or eating place that can be visited from the water without annoying problems.A bit of dredging would be a nice start along with a lick of paint and a repair or two in timber planking dept to make the place more visitor friendly.Only glimmer of hope is major water front housing development just started in town centre,so come on Medway Council sort out that scruffy and neglected waterfront to attract a few more posh boats.

Apparently, the P50 also does not come as standard with a smokescreen. They have also gone away from 45 gallon oildrums in the lazarette in favour of larger fuel tanks, and instead of dog hairs a foot deep they now use overlay carpets... But otherwise, very little difference, I'm sure.
