Interesting how tell tails Differ on different outboards.

A topic close to me, in spite of being a raggie. Our 25hp 4 stroke yam on our RIB/ chase boat has a telltale like a prize bull taking a leak. Our Honda 15 on the Dragonfly, we rarely see a telltale at all. Very nerve racking. It has an extension in it’scalready long shaft. This is apoarently too much for the water pump and small waterways for the telltale. If anyone has a view on that, very happy to hear it.

A telltale is just that. It is important that water is actually getting to the engine cooling areas. It most likely the route to the tell tale that is blocked. Try this

Yeah, been there, done that. After a thorough clear out you get a couple of little squirts for 5 mins then nothing. I have tried and so have our local Honda service agent.

The outlet nozzles of the tell tails do need clearing out from time to time, as salt crystals seem to develop right at the end of the tube. I keep a bit of thin strimmer flex inside the cowling, and when the flow stops a quick poke in the outlet and flow is returned.

Also the water systems are thermostaticly controlled so it isn't unheard of for the flow to stop from time to time, but it shouldn't be absent altogether.

It can indeed be absent altogether if the tell tail is blocked but water can sometimes be pumping fine. Most tell tails are not on the thermostat side and start pumping immediately.
