Interesting bit of history

Ripping up an old carpet I came across a copy of the Western Morning News for Jan 1988. The article that caught my eye was about a row between the BBC, supported by OSTAR sponsors Carlsberg who wanted Barracuda of Tarrant to be filmed taking part in the start of the race and the RWYC who wanted nothing to do with it.

Anybody recall what happened in the end?
 
According to the article the two options being considered were (a) not entering but being filmed during the start and (b) entering but sailing round the Eddystone, retiring and coming home for tea.
 
Michael_E will almost certainly know the answer to this, because he worked on Howard's Way. Have you tried a pm?

BTW, you have missed option (c): entering the race but having to withdraw because you've hit the Varvassi on your way to Plymouth. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
Howard's Way.

Barracuda of Tarrant was the original Sadler Barracuda and, for the purposes of the series, the main product of Tom Howard's Boatyard.

The series was often criticised by yotties as being unrealistic and full of sailing howlers - which is a bit like complaining about Dallas because it didn't portray the Oil industry very accurately. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
As I recall, there was an improbable amount of bonking (implied rather than specific) which seems rather out of kilter with the low level of sexual energy found in most boatyards I know. Actually let's rephrase that - the low level of energy found in most boatyards I know.

A veritable pinnacle of British TV, along with the superb Triangle.
 
But didnt they have a multihull capsize matched by the real boat flipping a few months later ?

AFAIR those two series were mostly a load of people shouting at each other in a well lit portakabin. By changing the title sequences they got two series for the price of one.
 
I was told that when filming Triangle - on a North Sea ferry - at first they had to delay the filming of some scenes for the next trip so that the sun was still in the right place.

Once they realised that the quality of the acting and the script was not up to expectations, they just filmed regardless so that on some scenes, opposing actors both may have the sun over a shoulder. Quality stuff. But nothing can sum up the series better than the image of Kate O'Mara sunbathing on a bare green painted deck. Industrial sunbathing at its best.
