Evening all, or morning perhaps…..depending where you are….

I need to refresh areas of deck paint where the grey Interdeck is flaking. I may be able to get away with doing this by hand thus allowing some maintenance whilst afloat in the marina, so ideally I’d like to avoid power tools.

Has anyone experience of doing this? I’m thinking a scotch-brite pad to take the flakes off then tape and re-paint. Not at the boat this weekend so no piccies I’m afraid.
 
If the Interdeck is flaking, then the gel coat surface was poorly prepared. Sand back with 60 grit paper. If you have boats down wind of you, then wet sand, if not dry sand. Make sure the feathered edges of old paint are fully bonded, then patch paint to raise the surface to existing level. Lightly sand the edges with 280 grit once dry and the repaint the whole deck.
 
Many thanks, I think it’s more a case that the grey Interdeck was paint straight over the original blue deck paint….at some point the whole lot will have to come off but I suppose I’m looking to avoid doing a full monty.

Done the full monty on Concerto. Took 10 days. That is why I made the recommendation. Even if repainting with the same colour, the new paint will show as patches, hence a full deck repaint. Do use a high grade long life masking take for the edges. I used 3½ rolls and took a day to tape up.

Good luck with that tedious job!

I have just done it with the deck of my 28-footer. I used paint stripper.
 
My deck paint is flaking badly, it’s interdeck with,I believe, garage floor paint over the top. As it’s rough with many flaking areas I’m taking the whole lot off this winter. I’m using a sharp chisel and this means the flakes can be swept up with a brush and pan. It’s hard work but very effective, after a few half days I’m nearly half way through.

Yes a sharp scraper might be better, thanks.
 
Agreed that the blue Interdeck must have been applied after poor preparation or just a poor surface or was itself a really ancient coating.
I applied grey over my original blue, in one coat, and found coverage ,roller applied finish and adhesion to be excellent-and still excellent after 5 years.
