Thanks to all who responded to my last post.
Now can I scrounge another peice, and ask for advice about fitting some sort of high temp warning siren and red warning light?
If I knew what the normal temp of the outside of the engine block should be, I would just buy a temp cut off switch and fit onto the block (somewhere on the top surfacee of the cyl head perhaps) then wire a siren of some kind through it, and a red light too.
Does this sound feasible? or has anyone got any better idea, if so, please build your nest in my ear.

Depends what engine you have. Some engines have the facility to fit a coolant temperature switch which screws into a fitting, normally near the thermostat. (On a car engine this is used for your temerature guage sender/ over temp light switch).

If you have a handbook for your engine check this out - it may be shown as an option. My last Volvo 2030 and my present Yanmar 4JH4E have this available - but not fitted.

You may be able to buy the switch from your engine dealer (probably at marine cost) or one that will fit from Halfords or somewhere.

As for the correct temp, probably depends upon engine. My manual states that the overheat light will come on above 95 deg C (where this is fitted)

when I purchased my boat the previous ownser had fitted a cheap Maplin thermometer with external probe (3m cable) strapped to the water pipe as it went off the the calorifier - worked fine and only cost £5. Unfortunately Maplin have stopped supplying them - I have trawled the web looking for a replacement but cant source on. If anyone out there finds one I'd be interested.
