hello,

I am now looking at insuring my sadler 25 after my insurer wishes to have a full survey before september before they will renew. Any one recommend an insurer to take over. I have a full survey report from 7 years ago will this suffice?

If you can accept 3rd party only ... then Basic Boat Insurance is not interested in surveys ...... and premium is a lot cheaper.

There are Ins Cos out there that are now not asking for surveys ... but be careful to read the wording - as many will have a survey to determine if boat WAS insurable if you claim etc. any defect will be against you.

I believe a Company DRW or DRG ... similar to that on East Coast is recc'd for ins without survey .....

7 yrs old survey is not good enough anyway ... max allowed is normally 5yrs for use to gain insurance when needed.

I recc'd KC Powell .... give Glen a call on 01702 47 00 35 .... they may accept the 7 yr one .... but at least they understand boats and are ready to discuss all manner .....

As said try K C Powell, they will probably need a survey if the boat is over a certain age, and then one every 5 years(I think). If you have to get a survey make sure you specify it's for insurance purposes. I had to get a survey but were happy to wait until it was ashore for the winter - K C Powell were quite understanding about this.

Hi Rob, there have been a few threads about this recently & it looks like going to a new insurer with a 20 year old boat will require a survey. This was certainly my experience. Bishop Skinner never asked for a survey on my Leisure 23 when I changed to them - my previous insurer wanted a survey at 15 years - nor did they ever ask for one, even at 20 years. However they did want a survey when we bought a 22 year old Griffon last year - as did all the others we tried. In the end we went with K C Powell as they were cheaper, but they will want a survey every 5 years; BS may not.

Bishop Skinner just gave me a quotye for a 20 year wooden boat without survey. As Nigel rightly points out, the policy wording requires the boat to be kept in seaworthy condition, meaning they will not pay if they find a defect after an accident or incident.

If I accept this I will pay my local wooden specialist boatbuilder to inspect and report on its' condition so that I have some evidence should a dispute arise. Cost? £50

I heard of this after the hurricane in 1990. A 24 ft motorsailer was torn from its moorings and swamped. It too had a no survey 'maintained seaworthy' clause Insurance with a well known company many of you use. It was refused because there was a (known) defect in the steering gear which the owner had not had time to put right!
