Hey! I have been paying my Boat Insurance for the last 5 years without a claim (fingers crossed) to a well known agent and the renewal was £300+ , yet today I received a Quote from SAGA on the telephone asking for £137, is this because I am over 50 or does everyone pay this sort of money.the boat is insured for £32k. I realise that every sort of question will be asked about the insurance from anyone interested in my post , yet the difference in charges are too big for me not to mention them.

I had similar experience. There is, it seems, at least one advantage to being over 50!

The theory is that we oldies are all too inactive or meek to do anything dnagerous and as Saga premiums don't have to fund the antics of expensive young tearaways (this is still the theory you understand) they can be much smaller.

But I'd be cautious until you see the renewal premium next year (you see they're right...we are more cautious...or experienced). Some insurers seem to resort to loss leaders presumably on the grounds that people will pay up whatever is demanded in subsequent years.

It would also be interesting to hear any experience of this company when faced with a claim.

Being officially past it, I looked at Saga as well, but their restrictions were too limiting for my boat - must be out of the water 1st October - 31st March, no foreign trips (24ft Snapdragon), oh, and we want a full out-of-water structural survey for comprehesive - on a <£5000 boat, etc.

It didn't suit me, but read the small print, and if it suits you, I'd go for it.
