just bought a fabulous 50 foot hole in the water in which to throw all my money, in the shape of a 1930's Fifie.

So.. hunting around for insurance, tried a few of the usual suspects that I'd used for other boats I've owned (modern plastic things) and once they'd all stopped sniggering told me they're not interested

just wondering if anyone else has any recommendations?? managed one quote so far - nearly 4grand!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
 
Curtis Marine in Plymouth specialise in classics - believe they advertise in Classic Boat. Mind you, if you expect to be refitting for any length of time, you might ask the people at Gweek Quay who is popular there. Remember, the vast majority of brokers are really acting as agents of the insurer and if it doesn't fit their pricing model, you just end up with a stupid price, rather than "sorry, not for us" so it can be a bit misleading.
 
Yachtmasters in Woodbridge (as Roach Says), they are very good, I used to use them, until I bought a boat which the previous insurers were happy to continuing covering without a new survey. Wehring Und Wolfes in Germany. I can PM you if interested.

50 foot Fife? Lots more details please! Are you going to keep it on the East Coast? Will you come to the Suffolk Yacht Harbour Regatta? I for one would love to see it there.

as for details, well, built 1938, called 'Pansy', she on the historic small ships register: http://nationalhistoricships.org.uk/index.cfm/event/getVessel/vref/1918/pic/5

but needs some TLC, luckily it mostly cosmetic. the previous owner spent an outrageous amount of money on her - replanking, new frames, new deck.... but took the masts off and built a new wheelhouse that I'm not mad keen on, and binned the lovely old Kelvin that was in her

our plan is to try get her back to her original self as much as possible, get the masts put back on if we can find a source, and redo the wheelhouse back to her original. other wise she is a very very solid boat for her age

at the moment she is same as above colour wise, minus masts and the wheelhouse was redone much the same size but the windows are huge
 
Another idea would be to get intouch with Art Butler of Deben Marine who is did Roach's electrics. He is currently converting a Fifie called Marie in Woodbridge - might want to ask him who he insures with. Delightfuly approachable chap. PM me for more details.
