I am currently looking to buy a 12' - 16' outboard boat but have very little knowledge on the subject.
Can anybody tell me whether it is a necessity to have insurance or whether it is just recommended.
Any comments would be much apreciated.

For the sake of the rest of us, yes, please buy insurance /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Fully comp.

Loads of insurance companies in the back pages of the YBW mags.

Given the regrettable tendency for people to claim if you even scratch paintwork, it really is a necessity to have good cover.

Search for "insurance" in the Forum, and you hear lots of evidence of good and bad insurance deals. Depending on the hp of the outboard, and your previous experience, 3rd party liability may be quite expensive, so if you don't have good experience or a qualification, a training course in boat handling will help keep the insurance company happy.

Lots of other advice on the Forum is here if you want it. Hope that you get the boat and have a lot of safe fun, and that you can show us some pix of the boat and your excursions. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you're going to keep your pride and joy in a marina, they are certain to want evidence of insurance. That aside, it really is a good idea as, although accidents are less frequent than with cars, they do happen and something you have the misfortune to hit could be a lot bigger and a lot more expensive than you!
