Sorry another insurance Q. Ive been with Pants for a year but now I'mm in the Canaries they're quoting £1000 for just Canaries, Maderia and Azores.. I heard about Y Yacht and they seemed quick and professional and quoted £650 for canaries, Azores, UK, Europe etc.

Anyway has anyone had any dealings with Y Yacht in the case of claims? I know Pants has a good reputation.

Y are well regarded here & Barrie Sullivan Y MD used to me Pants UK MD

Y is run by Barry Sullivan who used to run Pants in UK. Underwriter is Amlin. No reported problems with claims - at least here. The opposite as a couple of people have reported prompt settlement.

However the same can be said of most insurers. If there is a dispute with claims it is invariably because the claim is not covered by the policy rather than an unwillingness to pay. That is why wording of the policy is critical as this forms the contract. Y policy generally reckoned to be the best in both coverage and clarity of wording.

I've used Y for years and when I had a question about cover, a 1-to-1 chat wth Barrie sorted it (it's nice that the person running the company actually has an understanding of sailing too).

I’ve been with both Pants & Y Yacht. I made a claim with Y Yacht in 2016 & they were great, fighting my corner against a Greek Hotel boat to the point where I paid no excess.
Good people and very easy to deal with.

Had a claim with Y and they were OK.
There's a thread on the Cruising Association forum about a claim with Pants and, if accurate, their reputation for not quibbling is undeserved.

Why not just see if they will match the price?

Pants will be more expensive, I been with them for over 20 years and although I not happy paying over the odds for stuff in this case I do it for peace of mind , also a bit surprise the OP comment , when I asked about the Canaries islands , they just going to increase my excess . Which I found reasonable .
This also happen when I sailed in country not part of the EU and depend on how long I was going to be there for , a few weeks and they would be fine with it and didn't bother ..

To be fair I found them especially good when I was a new customer but when I was in Lisbon prior to my passage to the Canaries they were abrupt and fairly unhelpful. My policy covered me to 17nm from the Canaries and yet they said I wasn't covered for a passage to the Canaries. I clarified if that meant I wasn't covered "in" the Canaries... I.e once I got there.

They didn't seem very sure so we left anyway and on arrival found a quote for twice my existing premium. I sense they thought they had me by the b**ls and expected me to take any offer as we wanted to depart fairly soon from lisbon.

Anyway it's left me feeling a little sour I suppose but I have to admit everyone talks of Pants in high regard.

I know four boats that were damaged by Hurricane Ivan in Grenada, the Pantaenius representative arrived on the first flight in and all the claims were paid a week later. Which contradicts the CA article.

I have to say I know of several that got hit by lighten Robbie from here was one in Licata some years back and all the once ins with Pants got deal with very quickly , others wasn't so lucky , one of when we left quite a few months later was still arguing with their insurances.

How can you make any judgement when you do not know the exact circumstances of the dispute?

Plus, companies customer service can deteriorate rapidly. I've used Garmin products for 20 years and their aftersales support was once exemplary. After my most recent experience I would never buy a Garmin product again.

In the case of insurance claims there will always be the odd dispute because of the nature of the activity. That is why one needs to know the details of the dispute before slagging one off.

To an extent this applies to all organisations - I had exemplary service from Garmin solving a problem last year.

Pantaenius wouldn't even insure me, I think they only like newish big expensive yachts. I've had no problems with Y Yacht insurance though.

Been with Y Yacht for a few years now. A couple of years ago the dinghy cover on the foredeck blew off during a storm. Claim settled quickly and easily by ‘real’ people. Definitely would recommend.

I don't know what the dispute was and seemingly you don't either but it is a contradiction of what happened in Grenada, no quibbles there straightforward payment.
