Insurance winterisation requirements vs. tubular heaters

surely to be within 'manufacturer guidelines' would indicate that the engine would have the recommended antifreeze mix to suit potential tempratures you think you will have to endure?

without experience id say anythin with Salt water used for cooling (coastal) should manage to maintain that system to well below freezing thanks to the ambient temp of the sea and also the salt content. I imagine that maybe different on a non tidal river/canal/lake.

The worst winter we saw up in the highlands was a few years ago with temps down to -28. it was horrible. yet somehow the car managed fine with antifreeze.

I guess a lot of it comes down to making sure all preventative measures have been taken wether its draining systems to antifreeze and heaters.

thought I'd pop an email over to the very helpful people at GJW asking to clarify whether I am considered a competent mechanic when it comes to servicing the boat, including winterisation. I've received this as a reply:

"I confirm that it is acceptable by Underwriters that you carry out the maintenance works on your boat provided that you abide by manufacturers recommended guidelines"

it has got me scratching my head what manufacturer I need to abide by i.e. the boat manufacturer or the component manufacturer both of which will give recommendations in certain circumstances

Gary, I had a similar conversation with my broker, and got the same answer. At least they are consistent. :)
