Havent seen this so specified before in t+c,
your insurers will not pay claims for loss or damage caused by a weather event, unless the loss or damage is directly caused by a sudden and severe event related to a specific time and area....
Is this a new norm?

I think traditionally you would have cover for a specified peril-Storm
which as we know is defined as GF10 and above.

One judge then ruled that an average person would consider a Snow storm to be fair to be included and the whole issue became clouded.

Modern wordings tend to be much wider and don't mention specific perils, they are 'All risks' and then need to specify exclusions.

As people make claims they push the boundaries of the exclusions and force extra clarification which I believe is what your Insurer is attempting to do.

With weather station net works been readily available on the internet it makes sense that your Insurers don't want to pay out for an old set of tatty canopies that blew off in a F7, even if it was GF12 in Scotland.
(not suggesting for a second that you would try such a claim but there are many out there that feel Insurers should pay for general maintenance, including frost damage when reasonable precautions havent been taken.)
