I’ve received my policy renewal from GJW and the premium includes £20.00 itemised as a ‘Policy Fee’.
When queried I’m told this is for handling the paperwork, sending out the renewal notice etc.

It appears that I have to give them a £20 tip for doing their job!

Has anyone else come across this strange additional payment?

I've had it tried on for some car insurance in the past, by the broker not the insurance company. I said "I don't want to pay that" and the broker just renewed the policy without charging the fee.

If I were you I'd offer to renew the policy but without paying the £20 and see what they say. If they won't budge, shop around.

You do need to shop around or you may well find that the prices creep up each year. Notwhithstanding that I've only had this vessel 3 years, I have had others before that. I shop around every year and usually end up paying less than the previous year. This does mean half a dozen phone calls or emails but it has knocked £30-£50 off the annual. The successful insurers are always 1 of the same three I always use and seem to have my history on record.

The "Policy Fee" would be the first to go if your custom is valued.

I've never claimed either - that might make a difference.

You could always charge them £20 for prompt payment by yourself /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
