I need an insurance survey this year and I've just been quoted €984 for my 32'Furia in Empuriabrava. It seems a trifle excessive, especially as the pre-purchase full condition survey was half that.

What should I be paying these days?

Not sure quoting a UK price is going to help somebody in another country as practices and costs will be very different.

Kerching.

You should be paying a lot less than that I'd say.

It is possible the surveyor has misunderstood what you're asking for, but still...

Could you not get back whoever did the pre-purchase survey? Or fly in somebody from somewhere else?

I flew in a surveyor from England for my pre-purchase survey (in Dublin). He was willing to do it as a day trip, so I paid for the flights and we collected him from the airport. I did have to provide the tools that he wasn't allowed to carry in hand luggage, but that was no big deal. He just sent me an e-mail with what he wanted.

I was trying to avoid the pre-purchase surveyor as he specified several "recommendations" which I thought were unnecessary.

BTW, I forgot to add the IVA which brought it up to €1141.50(!), although €234 of that is travelling expenses from Barcelona.

However, I called the insurers, GJW, for advice and the agreed to extend the period until survey to 2021 as they are changing their survey requirements to every ten years. Result! :)

Good news.

An experienced surveyor with a bit of nous is unlikely to give the same recommendations in an insurance survey as in a pre-purchase. That's why it is worth making it clear exactly what you want. Obviously you want to know as much as the insurance company about things that have to be fixed, but it isn't necessary for the surveyor to be quite as nit-picking as in a pre-purchase survey.

They did the same with me 10 years ago when I started talking about changing insurer. Seems the insurance survey isn't quite as essential as is first claimed.

Hi

My boat is in S France and my insurance company have just done the same to me ...

I have found a surveyor for about GBP550 but then there are travelling costs on top which will be substantial because he is a 5 hour drive away and needs an overnight

The problem I am facing ( see my other post ) is now finding a qualified gas inspector ...any suggestions welcome!

Have you tried speaking to other insurance companies to see if any have less onerous conditions?

By the way, which company is it asking for a gas insurance cert? I've never been asked for that.

My current company is "Nautical" and I have also approached Topsail both want a survey.

To be fair boat is now 30years old and has been in our ownership for 20 years during which time the only survey was on purchase.

Issue for me is that my current company did not give me a "heads up" before I left the UK despite several discussions about extending the range.

Try ringing around other companies. There's a fair few on the Liveaboard forum who are in the E Med so a post there should get info on which companies they use.
