Has anyone ever been asked for a survey on insurance renewal? Our boat is a 1991 Princess and we have been advised that the insurers will require a survey report prior to renewal in 2013.

Is it planning / seagoing as most seem to stick to 20 years old for those and 30 for inland /displacement boats

Depends, if your changing companies then yes at 20 years, but the survey is more for valuation than actually proving thats everything works as per a pre purchase survey.

You might be better to fly a uk surveyor out to do it, although I recently had this discussion with a mate who has a 1988 Fairline sedan 36, he stayed with his company of many years they didnt rerquire a survey as long as he stayed with them.

We have insured with GJW for many yrs & they required a survey @ 20 yrs.I thought it was a good thing for one it gave the boat a clean bill of health & a current value.btw she had only lost £5000 in 14 yrs so we were not unhappy!.if I remember right it cost approx £300,regards mm1.

Thanks for the replies. We queried it with the broker and they want a full out of the water survey (with a surveyor belonging to an approved body) due to the age of the boat. Ho hum.

GJW

Plan b although GJW did require a survey I have to say they are a very good company to deal with.in 15yrs we have made only 1 claim with them but it was handled better than I expected with no argument& with all the help I needed(hit something & smashed props in Cherbourg )by the time we got home all was agreed & we were paid a few days later in full.i would certainly recommend them very highly, regards mm1

We're insured through Bishop Skinner and have been for 10 years. Happy with both service and premiums. Our only claim (some sc**** pinched our secured tender off the davits when on the hard, sawed through the lock and the davit cables) was dealt with perfectly.

Guess you are between a rock and a hard place. If you change insurers they will probably want a survey for fully comp.Worth trying a to get a quote elsewhere if you have time also, might be worth getting something in writing about frequency of surveys, as it would be taking the p if they ask for another in a year or 2!

gas survey?

one thing i forgot to tell you was that a gas survey(if you have on board)will also be required,we got ours done before general survey(all ok except for the flexi pipe from bottle to regulator )replaced & passed, the surveror could then put it in his report as being ok.the other point(sorry to go on)is HALON IS ILLEGAL but i am sure you know that!,regards mm1.
