I'm due to renew my insurance shortly and I am considering using a swinging mooring next season. As my boat is only a 26 footer I don't really feel it justifies paying marina prices. Do you think this will affect my premium considerably???

Thanks in advance.

Didn't affect mine one jot. We gave up a berth in Lymington Yacht Haven to go gypsy and the premium remained unchanged despite using a constantly changing string of council / Harbour Authority / boatyard moorings either alongside or swinging, private or public.

Navigators and General.

Not by anything like the difference between the cost of a mooring and a marina - I think I pay something like £17 a month to insure a 28 footer that is kept on a swinging mooring. Whilst I can't say what insurance would have cost had I been berthed in a marina, I can't imagine it being more than a pound or two a month cheaper than what I pay just now, if there would be any difference at all.

I currently keep my boat on a swinging mooring and asked if there would be any discount if i moved to a marina berth the answer was no.The only differance is that
i am not covered on the mooring from November to March. But i never leave the boat in over the winter so this is not a problem

whilst i swap round brokers every year on all my other insurance, i have kept my boat with heath lambert for several years now. i deal with them on 01512274321. its a real pleasure to deal with someone (will give name if you pm me) who actually knows what he is talking about rather than some young girl in a call center. gives me confidence.

the rates have always been good (you should always check each renewal), boat on a mooring in a river, 12 months in commission inc single handed sailing etc. sort out any special requirements when your negotiating position is best ie before you give someone the business.

cant say what they are like in a claim since i have never had one. (touches wood). no personal connection

Mine upped the premium by about a third. Some insurance companies insist that the moorings are lifted and inspected annually, check their terms and also the practice on the moorings you propose to use, as many public moorings are done less often.

so is mine - most mooring providers only allow a sumer season, and you are at your own risk outside that. I am not sure how that leaves you with your insurer.
