Check your home contents insurance small print. I've just discovered that handheld VHF and handheld GPS are not covered by the Royal and Sun Alliance Home Contents policy (though Lloyds Bank) when they are kept at home.

I'm just waiting to see if the boats insurance will cover them after a break in at home.

curious as to why they arent covered - is it because they would be covered on the boat insurance? in which case what happens with the same gps used for hiking?

I've just had a quick look at my Zurich policy and, in the Contents section it says 'contents are not ..... vehicles and craft and their accessories other than removeable audio and satellite navigation equipment not in the vehicle....' I interpret this as meaning they are covered if you take them out of the car or boat and keep them at home when not in use. It also specifically includes cover for accidental damage for 'telecommunications equipment but not mobile phones'.
Policies obviously vary a lot. Yet another case of always reading the small print before committing yourself if possible.

On another slightly related subject - check the small print on your travel policies. Many of them won't cover you against missing a flight if the delay is because of, for example, a crash closing the motorway if your own car is not directly involved. Others do cover you. A colleague of mine missed a flight when the M5 was closed during the floods and found out the hard way that his policy was no use. (And we both work in insurance so should have known better.)

On a related theme, it is also worth checking that your outboard and tender are covered when stored at home, mine were not, so I found out after a lightfingered fellow had visited our home.
