insurance forms- what \'occupation\' when you\'ve left?

we are just about to 'go' and one of things on my vaaaaaast list is house insurance.

we will have packed in work so when we come to fill in the forms, what should we put as our occupation when frankly we won't have one. what could we say we do that won't attract heafty premiums. i can't imagine that 'sailing traveller' or 'sea gypsy' would be looked on too favourably!

we aren't intending leaving the house empty, but still need to have buildings and contents insurance.

thanks

How about "retired". Whatever you do, don't say that you're a "landlord" because tenants tend to mess a property up.

But don't conceal the fact that it's let or they'll almost certainly say the policy is void in the event of a claim.

Tell them what exactly what you are doing. Put it in writing. Get them to confirm it.
If you don't and you make a claim, they will find a way out. I mean wouldn't you if you found somebody hadn't been honest with you?

Why do so many people try to bullshit insurance companies then bitch when the insurance company rightly baulks at paying?

Tell the truth and sleep nights. Next thing you know you'll tell us you have given everybody 150N lifejackets instead of the 275s telling them they're right and convincing yourself nothing will happen.

Have to dissagree with you on this. Under occupation it would be correct to enter NONE. If the insurance company questions it , then and only then, do you need to tell them about your extended vacation plans. Of course you must inform them if you rent the gaff out whilst you're away playing!!

If you leave the place empty you need to tell them too. Most policies only cover unoccupied properties for 1 month.

i agree that you should write none for occupation.however you are entering into a contract and you sign to say you have disclosed all material facts in upmost good faith.i think imho a material fact is if you are spending more time away from the house than could be considered normal.it will certainly be a material fact if it comes to a claim. disclose everything in writing and get a replyin writing.

I would suggest that you list your occupation as "yacht skipper" or maybe "sea captain". Cruising is an occupation in itself, you just don't usually get paid for it!
