What is the best insurance to get for chartering a yacht abroad? I've been ripped off twice now (out of about 10 charters) for 'damage' i haven't done! One was a clip missing from the EPIRB so they claimed they had to go to Athens from Corfu to get a new part...200Euros and second was Croatia, alleged damage to the bow from the anchor......250Euros!

We bought annual yachtsman's travel insurance from Topsail with the damage deposit waiver added. It isn't cheap but we have squeezed in 3x charter holidays in the 12 months (June 18, March 19 and June 19).

The policy (inc travel cover and cancellation if our skipper [aka husband] was unable to go) was about £400 but we had two couples on it (my brother and his wife as well) so worked out per trip at the same or less than pure damage waiver cover (for the cat we chartered in the Caribbean the damage waiver for that week alone would have been £252).

If you can squeeze in one trip per year, but bring the second one forward to squeak in before the policy expires (if that makes sense!) it can work out a good way to do it :encouragement:

ETA you will still of course need to leave a hold on you credit card and the same as with excess cover for hire cars, the charter co will charge you and then the insurance reimburses

Best riposte for "damage you haven't done" is a very careful check in , going through the inventory properly (and I know that no-one wants to waste time doing this at the start of a holiday.) Also lots of photos all round the obvious bumper bits on the boat.
As to the amounts charged, they don't look too excessive when you consider that someone from the charter company will have to organise, supervise etc to put the boat back in pre-incident condition, in rapid time for the next charter.
