All you people out there with old wooden boats will know about all the love, care and cash we give our boats. Yes I know the the rest do as well but I don't have one of those!! I want an insurance company that understands this and looks upon us as indivuduals. I have a classic bike and can get special insurance for the bike. Are there any companies out there which do the same, rather than lump us all together.

The only way I can thik that you might get similar insurance to that for classic vehicles might be if you hav a restricted use policy, say May-Aug, home waters only. Could be worth trying Pantainius but I belive they now have a min value so depends on the boat

Bishop Skinner had no problem insuring my 30 yr old 26 foot plywood Eventide. They asked for photographic evidence of the condition, and included a 'catch-all' phrase along the lines ".... you must take all reasonable steps to ensure your boat is in a seaworthy condition"

In other words in the event of a claim, if their surveyor finds something you should have spotted and dealt with - tough! no payout!

I had my local boatbuilder go over the boat and report on it with recommendations - cost around £50 - together with evidence that his findings had been properly dealt with. The report remained with the ships papers, but I never had to make a claim so do not know if that would have been enough to defend a claim of having "taken all reasonable steps".
