There's so many insurance companies to choose from for yacht cruising... are there any in particular that people recommend?

I guess some are cheaper, but some offer a better service? Which is the best compromise?

I'll be insuring an old ~25 foot yacht.

Thanks!

In my experience Pantaneus are extremely good at paying out but are not the cheapest and may choose not to insure an old boat, Yachtmaster Brokers are very user friendly, cheap and specialise in boats that some companies do not want eg Cats, ferro and wooden boats, Navigators and General have few restrictions on the policy, eg moorings, solo sailing, night sailing etc and their policy wording is in plain english and does not appear to have any "small print getout clauses" but I do not know generlly how readily they payout in the event of a claim although I am aware of one claim they settled very quickly for a friend of mine whose boat was clattered by an unknown boat when on his mooring, also cheap.

Hope this is helpful

I have been insured with N&G for many years, have had 3 claims in that time, and they have been first class in support and speed of settlement.
1st time I was rammed by someone making a horlicks of picking up his mooring, settled in full by other party eventually with help from N&G, 2nd time boat was blown over in gale when laid up ashore. Quickly settled, and £100 excess recovered from yard!
3rd was a racing incident, I was on Starboard - fortunately ! - again full settlement and £100 excess recovered.
I cannot fault them

Sorry to intervene, nature of the post leaves it open to potential legal issues... could just be a competitor badmouthing for example.

Thanks,
Dan

I've had my last two boats ('67 wooden 26' Maurice Griffiths and '68 GRP 30' Cheoy Lee) insured with Haven Knox Johnston. Not the cheapest but, in my experience, excellent service and quick to settle the one claim I've made.

Craftinsure - email job so low costs. They go to all the main boatshows in person. Issuing Navigators and General policies. Know what they are talking about and generous in policy detail - areas covered, single handing etc. Best price, and cheaper than going direct to the insurers - crazy, but that's how the insurance business works!

And I've popped up here too... Sorry sbc!

Careful - I got my knuckles wrapped for naming and shaming a while ago ...

Aah! Traffords? I've just got a quote from them(AXA Insurance) and they seem reasonable, also another reasonable quote from Bishop Skinner, both saving about £60 over KC Powell(now GJW)
I'll have to think about it now....

Ive been with K C Powell for 7 years but sold boat and bought another smaller one. They proved very difficult about the state of the boat and wanted surveyor to look at it before it went on the water on the upper Deben for short motoring tests. I was previously with GJW Direct and did not like them! Didn't put boat on the water and will be looking for another company. How about Yatchmaster who I think are based at Woodbridge??

I'm saddened by changes at KC Powell ... as I was very happy with them for years ... premiums were good and less than most ... calling them - you spoke with a person who understand what you were talking about ... seems the hand-over to GJW may not have been so good after all .... sad.

There is another - Giles ... I was with them after my Newton Crum disaster ... Giles were excellent ... only went to KC Powell when they quoted less than Giles ...
