Help!
Having just passed RYA DS Theory and although I've owned a boat before on the Thames 10 years ago, I took SWMBO out to a boatyard to see if she even liked the idea, or just dismissed it out of hand.
Shock horror, we not only put an offer in but the finance was accepted and we now own a Draco 2500 Twincab with 2 x VP 145's!
The boat is in Essex and we live in Chatham, so am now looking for advice on insurance co's. & moorings. Looking for somewhere on the Medway so we are local to the boat, any suggestions gratefully received.

Do a search on insurance. Theres loads of posts. Marina means cheaper insurance but boat insurance is not dear anyway. Just find the mooring/marina you like then sort out insurance.

No one can force me to come here-----------

Hi,

Can't necessarily speak from experience, but i use www.craftinsure.com for insurance, but i have heard a lot of the guys on here speak highly of GJW.

Re moorings, depends what you are looking for. Bought my current boat from Medway bridge Marina, more of a working marina than a "Gin and Tonic" one... but the facilities seem ok.

From memory, most of the marina's round there seem to have petrol - whcih will be quite handy for you!

You need to think about where you want to use the boat. From memory, i think the Draco is quite a fast vessell, therefore will be mroe suited to the coast. Maybe a marina that is quite close to the Thames Estuary will be better than one that is quite a cruise in land?

Anyway, congratulations on buying a boat.. have some fun.. that is what it is all about!

Cheers,

Craig.

Re: Moorings

GJW seem to get a good press hereabouts.

For a marina, there's medway bridge which is indeed known as a "working" marina. This is code for "a bit of a dump", but they are nice people, and it should be quite cheap.

Just a mile further down is Gillingham, owned by someone who is fastidious about the place, with shrubberies and nice bricks around the car parks and very smart indeed, imho. SDo i'd keep it there if it's a poshish boat, or medway bridge if counting the pennies. Get prices and availability from both praps?

Congrats on new boat. Insurance is fairly cheap, quite a bit cheaper than car ins. Try GJW or the other big names (Pantheous (SP?) ) that advertise in mby.

Is that your car? Cor blimey wait till BarryD (poster hereabouts, TR7v8 person) sees it

Ha! suckkerr, you gonna end up potless! No seriously tho, I've used GJW and never had a prob with them. As all the other peeps have said below. Gillingham is a nice marina, and to be honest I would rather leave it there than a "working" boat yard. Its a fair lump of disposable income left floating around so to speak, so would rather know its gonna be safe and looked after

Smile. its only money!

Re: Insurance and Moorings now thanks

Cheers guys, yes Gillinham was the preferred option of someone here who has a boat.
His major issue with Medway Bridge is the rubber and diesel dust off the motorway, made worse by the CTRL and M2 widening work going on.
As regards the user name, yes I've a TR7 V8 which is the other love of my life.

Update time, After a tour on Friday looking at Marinas, we in fact looked at 3, Medway Bridge; scruffy not brilliant security, ont impressed, Chatham Medway Maritime; an MDL marina, still to have a lot of building work done around it, finally Gillingham, which the wife loved and so did I. So Gillingham it is then.
Insurance has stalled, because GJW want a complete out of the water survey, Nautical Insurance Services have been recommended and I'll sort that out.

TR7V8...

Ahh I miss mine - sold it last year for a stupid price. Now being told to sell my Stag. "Well you don't use it" SWMBO cries - "It's a lie, only last week I polished it".

Back to the boat then....

Most insurance companies are going to ask for a survey on hull older than three years, and it sounds like you've settled on a nuice marina. See Haydn and get a forum flag!

The correct phraseology is "Are we insured..." NOT "Were we insured"
(IMHO, BTW, FWIW and NWGOI)

Re: TR7V8...

Stand up for your rights, when I designed our new house the start point was a 700 sq ft garage to rebuild the TR7. But I must admit, the removable lounge floor section to slot the boat in, hull in garage, deck in lounge, fell on totally stoney ground. Still think it a great idea, no lay-up cost's, no travelling, no cold winter days working on boat, and food and drink laid on.
