I have some friends using the boat for a few days in June so I thought I'd write them a sort of users manual. Big mistake as I seem to have lost most of my memory and the ability to communicate in plain english.
Cannot remember whether its the left or right hand knob for the water heater, can 'feel' how far you push the throttle lever when starting but cannot describe it. Trying to describe how to get into the dinghy once you've lowered it down in the davits has turned into a mildly pornographic exercise which doesn't seem to avoid 'getting your leg over' the stern rail.
The sequence for what to switch on when and when to switch to battery 1, both or 2 is something we do automatically but its taken me about half an hour to describe.
Anyone else ever done anything similar?

i might be able to help ... in a small way, of course.

leave them some means of getting on the internet to this site with instructions to search for "claymore" or "claysie" and then do a sort-of sub-search for the particular article causing confusion, botheration and misunderstanding.

over the years, your many friends have described in loving detail each and every component that is currently the "claymore package". You might explain that the recent addition of a fart extractor is not something we are familiar with so best just switch it off should an emergency arise ...

Yep, been there. Took loads of piccies with the digital camera and scrawled notes on each of them, although I can't remember any pornographic tasks, or resultant images.. A real idiots guide, compiled by a right idiot. It worked well though. Alternatively you could label everything "Do Not Touch".

Well - we've been friends for years so no reason why not. I'm trying to avoid producing a Do's and Don't list which I always find offputting - the biggest difficulty is in sitting 300 miles away from Claymore and trying to remember how things work

Not quite an Instruction manual but following that accident in the Solent when the skipper was killed by the boom in a force 2 and no one on board had a clue how to operate the VHF or lights etc. , I prepared a short document with the grand title of "Safety Policy and Emergency Operating Instructions".

Includes sections on Life Jacket and harness useage, Radio use, control of the engine, lights and locations of fire extinguishers and First Aid box. All made in an A5 size booklet.

I refer to it during new crew briefing and it stays on the chart table for crew to read when we are underway.

Does anyone else have a similar document?

I like the idea of using pictures had not thought of that.

I've done my 'boat manual' - a lot of work, but I went out to the boat with a pad & pen, and actually went through the motions (as it were!) and then wrote down what I did.
A bit of a diagram of where things are - such as sea cocks, switches etc. Doing things 'automatically' certainly stuffs up remembering well enough to give instructions away from the boat.
And then there is keeping the manual up to date????
Keep at it!

Re: Claymore Airways ...

does this mean we are to receive a safety briefing this year (hopefully, in the style of an air hostess)?

Absolutely - with particular attention being paid to where the elastoplasts are if you go putting your hands into carrier bags full of rusty auld fishing hooks which some auld scroat left strategically positioned to draw the most amount of blood in the quickest available time

Stopcocks, seacocks, nobs and whistles
Where to dump and how to pistle
How to steer and where to go
Where the pies are I don't know.....
What to do when things go wrong
Your manual I fear will be to long
By the time they look it through
They'll be no wiserer than you
So as far as I can tell,
Forget the Manual an go yersel'
