Oh wise forumites...
I now have in my possession a snazzy Sterling ProReg D alternator regulator thingymabob that I'm hoping will make a big difference to our engine charging this coming season.

But I appear to have stumbled at the first hurdle.

I've read the manual, and it all seems pretty straightforward. I now need to remove the bit from the back of the alternator in order to solder a couple of wires on there.
However, this is what I'm faced with:

It looks a little more complex than the manual would suggest, so I request some advice from the forum before I start indiscriminately removing bits from the alternator. Unfortunately, I also have no idea what brand it is. The label seems to have been painted over, so if anyone could let me know what the alternator is, that would also be handy.

The engine is a 2010 Beta 35.

It looks like an Iskra alternator.

Edit: Iskra products are now marketed under the Letrika name.

It is an Iskra alternator as also fitted to my Beta 30. I also have a sterling regulator ( that I've had for a year now)to fit and am loath to take the Iskra apart so I will be very interested to see how you get on.

With many alternators the only way to attach the necessary extra field connection is to open the alternator up. I thought this was reasonably clear in the instructions which you could have read before purchasing? Regard it as good opportunity to check and maybe replace the brushes and bearings :) I suspect it is the primary reason that the (considerably more expense) 'alternator-to-battery' charge boosters are so popular.

Oh wise forumites...

And a not so wise one.

Really you need to get in deeper to expose the brushes.

I guess for starters the rectangular black thing ( bottom of Tradewinds improved picture) with the two heavy red wire will unplug.

Unplug it and disconnect any other wires.

Remove the alternator.

Remove the large black cover and you should then be able to identify the brushes.

If in anydoubt take the alternator to an automobile electrician and get him to just solder on the wire you will actually need to use

Hi,

Try this link which is for a slightly bigger Iskra but hope it is helpful

Otherwise take to auto electrician and ask them to do it for you.

I did it on a Bukh 36hp alternator a number of years ago when fitting an Adverc. It is daunting before you do it and while doing it - then you wonder what the fuss was about !

There isn't much info out there on the web about how to do this on an Iskra alternator; the link above was found after going through page after page of Google. I need to do it to my Beta 20hp 70A Iskra to fit an Adverc - so you might like to take some photos and write it up somewhere ?
Good luck.

Thanks for the various replies.

Poecheng gets the gold star today. He's PM'd me instructions for my specific alternator. To say it's an easy job is an understatement. The brushes are on the component that's on the right of Tradewinds's retouched image. Two funny screws and it pops out. Solder away, job done. There's even a nice gap to lead the wire out.

I've popped off the alternator and will take it how with me tonight and get on with the soldering. I shall let you know how I get on!

And all done! Took a while to get all the various wires routed and connected up, including losing some skin off my knuckles getting the wires through bulkheads, but it is finito!

I wasn't able to test thoroughly as we're currently out of the water, but I was able to get the engine running for a few moments where the appropriate LEDs came on.

The slightly awkward wires were the brown and yellow wires, which I ended up soldering onto the end of the D+ pin where the existing D+ wire is crimped.

I'm about to install a gm 10 si alternator (100amp).
If i get it right the connections are already done for sterling proreg.?
my system is a prosplit 123r with prorg bw 12.

On connection 1 i think i should put the yellow and the brown cable and on connection 2 the white cable.
On batt , i will put the cable from alt in on prosplit.

if its an Iskra ie Letrica check the regulator setting voltage on the alternator some marine ones are set at 14.6 volts and Sterling admit their equipment is useless at that voltage

Useless because it would serve no useful purpose if the alternator is already set as high as 14.6 volt
