I'm pretty sure there was an article showing you how to fit a windlass/capstan in PBO not so long ago? It was quite a good article that showed step by step. Perhaps have a word with the back issue department if its not available online.

Read of Aquella's problems in thread http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?399598-Retrieving-the-anchor-alone-in-a-gale

This should impress on you the importance of a free fall of chain into the anchor locker so that it self-stows. I once spent a few months delivering a friend's Jeanneau where the chain had to be swept forward from under the winch before it jammed, into the locker as it came aboard. If you ever sail single-handed this is an important point.

Has anyone fitted a windlass successfully on a Beneteau F285?

Yep! I fitted one on mine.

I mounted it on 18mm marine ply which is screwed to battens on 3 sides of the chain locker. The battens are through bolted to more battens in the cabin so that the fibre glass is sandwiched between the battens. The mounting plate is set it the chain locker so that the cover closes over it. Each side of the windlass I put foot switches so that you sit on the foredeck and operate the switches with your feet which leaves both hands free to feed the chain forward as the locker is very shallow and the chain jams if not fed forward.

This works pretty well for me.
